A Fun and Intimate Wedding at The West Lodge Hotel, Bantry, West Cork

Ger & Noreen tied the knot at the stunning West Lodge Hotel in Bantry, West Cork. I have some awesome couples, and I feel incredibly lucky that the ones who book me are as mad and fun-loving as myself. Ger and Noreen were no exception. They were so relaxed and just wanted everything to run smoothly, which set the tone for a fantastic day.

From the moment I arrived at Noreen's parents' house, I was welcomed with open arms. Her family is the salt of the earth—genuine, down-to-earth people. Right away, we got into the craic, and Noreen’s mum, or "Mammy" as I called her on the day, was the first to start joking with me. She offered me tea, coffee, and scones the second I walked in. Even though I had just eaten, Mammy wasn't having it, playfully teasing me with, "Don't drink my coffee or eat my scones then!" I knew from that moment the day was going to be a blast.

Despite the weather, which was pouring rain from the morning on, Noreen and her family kept the mood light and full of laughter. There’s nothing I love more than weddings that don’t feel like work, but like I’m photographing friends. By the time we reached the West Lodge Hotel, the rain had only gotten heavier. Bantry, with its stunning views and west coast charm, was soaked, but we were all still in high spirits.

Bantry Town: A Hidden Gem in West Cork

For those of you unfamiliar with Bantry, let me tell you—this place is West Cork at its finest. Nestled between rugged hills and the stunning Bantry Bay, the town is a gateway to some of Ireland’s most picturesque landscapes. It’s got that quintessential Irish charm, with colorful shopfronts lining the streets, traditional pubs where you can always find good music, and a community that feels like one big family.

One of the town’s most famous spots is Bantry House, a historic estate with breathtaking views of the bay. The gardens are something out of a storybook, with terraced walks and sweeping views that stretch out over the water. If you’re ever in Bantry, it’s a must-visit location, whether you’re exploring on your own or planning a wedding. Even though we didn’t have time to visit the grounds for photos due to the rain, it’s an amazing backdrop for any wedding or couple shoot.

Bantry is also known for its bustling weekend markets and a lively harbor that gives you a taste of life on the Wild Atlantic Way. The rolling hills and rugged coastline of West Cork make it a dream location for wedding photography—rain or shine. I’ve shot weddings all over Cork and Kerry, but Bantry holds a special place in my heart. There’s just something magical about this place, even when the weather has a mind of its own.

Noreen arrived at the hotel first, and we had to send her on a quick drive around town because Ger was running a little behind. When Ger did arrive, cool as ever, he said, "They can't start without me!" with a cheeky grin. It was a beautiful, intimate ceremony, full of laughs, and despite the drizzle, we managed to sneak out for a few quick outdoor shots in between the raindrops. Bantry’s surroundings are too beautiful not to capture, even in the rain!

Later in the evening, Jason O'Callaghan, the hypnotist, had traveled all the way down to entertain everyone. He had the room in hysterics, with family and friends laughing uncontrollably as they were hypnotized. It was the perfect end to a fabulous day—amazing people, an unforgettable location, and a whole lot of laughs.
