The Drive to Valentia Island: Discovering a Hidden Kerry Gem

After years of photographing breathtaking landscapes, Valentia Island in Co. Kerry managed to take me by surprise. Driving down that morning for Dean & Madie’s wedding felt like discovering a piece of Ireland I never knew existed. The winding roads and rugged coastline were more stunning than I could have imagined. Even though Ireland is small, Valentia, tucked away in Kerry, is a treasure that stands out—a reminder of the untouched beauty our country holds.

Steeped in history, Valentia Island holds its own quiet magic. It was here that the first transatlantic cable connected Europe and America in 1858, marking the beginning of a new era in communication. Yet, the island’s charm goes far beyond its historical significance. The jagged cliffs, panoramic sea views, and the Valentia Lighthouse—all set against a backdrop of unpredictable Irish weather—create a landscape that’s both dramatic and inviting.

A Wedding Morning Full of Joy

As I joined Madie on her wedding morning, the atmosphere was pure excitement. She was cool, collected, and clearly in high spirits. Her bridal crew was there to make sure the day started off right, and laughter echoed through the room. Every moment was effortless and fun, a genuine celebration before the big event even began.

Madie was the definition of relaxed, taking everything in stride with a smile. Her excitement was infectious, and the room buzzed with energy as preparations continued. From the jokes to the sentimental moments, it was clear that this group of friends was ready to make the day special.

A Beautiful Ceremony in Knightstown

The ceremony was set at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, right in the heart of Knightstown. The church, with its classic charm and warm light, was the perfect setting for such an occasion. As I arrived, Dean was already there—looking sharp in his suit and surrounded by his groomsmen. It was a welcoming scene, with a sense of calm confidence from the entire wedding party.

Seeing Madie walk down the aisle was unforgettable. The light filtering through stained glass added to the moment as she made her way towards Dean, who waited with his brother by his side. Emotions ran high, and when Madie reached him, a tear escaped as they embraced—a genuine, heartfelt moment.

One of the sweetest memories happened during the ceremony. A little girl, sitting just behind Dean’s brother, kept leaning forward to playfully touch his hair. Each time he turned around to make her giggle, it added a touch of lightness to the ceremony, a reminder of the joy that surrounded the couple.

A Photoshoot in Valentia's Rugged Beauty

After the ceremony, Dean and Madie set off in a vintage car, heading to Valentia Lighthouse for some photos. The raw, windswept beauty of the landscape was the perfect backdrop for capturing their connection. The cliffs and crashing waves framed the couple’s joy, and the dramatic weather added a sense of adventure to every shot.

A Grand Celebration at The Great Southern Hotel

The reception took place at the elegant Great Southern Hotel in Killarney, a venue renowned for its classic charm and timeless style. This hotel, with its lush gardens and welcoming atmosphere, has been a centerpiece in Killarney since 1854. It’s a place where history and modern celebration meet seamlessly, making it the ideal choice for Dean and Madie’s reception.

The room was beautifully set, with elegant decor and a lively atmosphere that only grew as the evening progressed. Speeches followed, each one pulling on heartstrings and bringing out plenty of laughter, a true reflection of the love and friendship in the room.

A Night to Remember

As the first dance began, Dean and Madie moved together with smiles that said more than words ever could. Under the soft lights of the ballroom, surrounded by friends and family, it was clear that this was the beginning of a lifelong journey together.

A Grateful Thank You
