Children covering their eyes as their parents share a kiss in West Cork

A West Cork Wedding Built Around Family, Laughter & Love | Kyra & Chris

Some weddings are all about the details.

The flowers.

The dress.

The centrepieces.

The timelines.

Kyra and Chris’s wedding wasn’t one of those weddings.

From the moment I arrived that morning in West Cork, it was obvious what mattered most to them.

Family.

Not the kind of family you mention in a speech and move on from. The kind of family woven into every part of the day. The kind of family that fills a house with noise before breakfast, children running through every room and laughter coming from every corner.

When I arrived at the house, the ladies were already in full swing. Hair and makeup were underway, music was playing, breakfast was on the go and there seemed to be children appearing from every direction.

It felt less like walking into a wedding morning and more like walking into a family gathering that just happened to end with a wedding.

And honestly, I loved that.

A Morning Full Of Life

One thing became clear very quickly.

Kyra wasn’t interested in turning her wedding day into a photoshoot.

She wasn’t worrying about creating hundreds of posed photographs or spending half the day standing in front of a camera.

What mattered to her were the people around her.

Her children.

Her family.

Her friends.

The wedding itself.

As a photographer, I completely understood that.

Some couples love being in front of a camera.

Most don’t.

And that’s perfectly okay.

The best photographs rarely come from people performing for a camera anyway. They come from people enjoying their day.

So that’s exactly what we did.

We let the morning unfold.

We laughed.

We chatted.

I chased children around the house trying to catch a smile before they disappeared around another corner.

And slowly, naturally, the photographs started to happen.

Then a tractor appeared.

Only in West Cork.

Outside the house, a trailer loaded with hay bales rolled by. We waved the farmer down and threw out the idea of grabbing a few photographs.

The farmer was completely up for it.

The bridesmaids were completely up for it.

And before long, Kyra found herself standing on top of a trailer full of hay bales with her closest friends laughing their heads off.

Not because she suddenly wanted attention.

Not because she suddenly loved having her photograph taken.

But because she was having fun.

Looking back now, that moment probably sums up the entire day.

Nobody was trying to create perfect photographs.

Everyone was simply enjoying themselves.

The photographs came afterwards.

Down By The Harbour

While all of this was happening, Chris and the lads were getting ready down by the harbour.

The craic was already in full swing.

Chris had absolutely no concerns about being in front of a camera. He was relaxed, laughing and clearly excited for the day ahead.

His three boys were there too and between getting suited and booted and winding each other up, there was never a dull moment.

The harbour made the perfect backdrop for a few photographs before everyone made their way towards Goleen.

The scenery down there is unbelievable.

The sea.

The boats.

The rugged West Cork coastline.

It felt like the perfect setting for what was about to unfold.

Seeing Mam In Her Wedding Dress

One of my favourite moments of the entire day happened before the ceremony even started.

As Kyra arrived at the church with her dad, her boys spotted her.

For the first time, they were seeing their mam in her wedding dress.

And for anyone who knows Kyra, they’ll know her children are her world.

Long before she was a bride, she was a mother.

The kind of mother who puts her boys at the centre of everything she does.

Nobody told them what to do.

Nobody posed anything.

It was simply one of those real moments that happens in a split second and disappears just as quickly.

The sort of moment that means everything to a family.

Inside the church, Chris waited patiently at the top of the aisle.

He’d been relaxed all morning.

Then he turned and saw Kyra.

Like so many grooms before him, the emotions arrived all at once.

He tried his best to hold them together.

He wasn’t entirely successful.

A few tears appeared.

And honestly, they were some of my favourite photographs of the day.

Because they’re real.

A Quick Stop In Alder

After the ceremony, we made a quick stop in Alder.

The scenery around this part of West Cork is too beautiful to ignore and thankfully everyone was on board.

The ancient stones became an adventure playground for the children.

At one point all the kids covered their eyes while Kyra and Chris shared a kiss beneath them.

A simple photograph.

A fun photograph.

But one I know the family will smile at for years.

We spent a little time walking, laughing and enjoying the views before continuing towards Schull Harbour Hotel.

The sun stayed with us all afternoon.

The Speech Nobody Will Forget

The speeches were filled with laughter.

Stories.

Memories.

The usual wedding banter.

Then Chris’s father stood up.

As he spoke about his son, it became obvious how proud he was.

Proud of the man Chris had become.

Proud of the life he and Kyra had built together.

Proud of the family sitting around them.

Across the room, emotions started appearing.

Chris did his best not to look directly at his father.

Sometimes one look is all it takes.

His sister Danielle wasn’t quite as successful at hiding her emotions.

The tissues came out.

The tears followed.

And for a few minutes, the room was completely captivated.

It was one of those beautiful reminders that weddings are about so much more than dresses, flowers and timelines.

They’re about people.

They’re about family.

They’re about love.

The Kind Of Wedding I’ll Remember

When I think back on Kyra and Chris’s wedding, I don’t immediately think about the sunshine, the harbour views or even the hay bales.

I think about the people.

Freya and Jess quietly stealing scenes all day long.

The boys making everyone laugh.

The bridesmaids talking Kyra into one more adventure.

Chris trying to hold back tears.

Danielle wiping her eyes during her father’s speech.

A family coming together to celebrate something truly special.

One photograph from the speeches stays with me.

Chris wasn’t looking at his dad.

At first glance, you might wonder why.

But the answer is right there in the image.

His father was doing everything he could to hold it together while speaking about his son.

I knew instantly why Chris was looking away.

Because one glance towards him would probably have been enough to set them both off.

It’s one of those moments that reminds me why photographs can be more powerful than words.

You don’t need anybody to explain what’s happening.

You can feel it.

The love.

The pride.

The emotion.

The years of memories sitting behind a single look.

Those raw, emotional moments that tug at the heartstrings are what I love most about wedding photography.

Not the posed photographs.

Not the perfect details.

The real stuff.

The moments that tell you everything about a family without saying a single word.

Every wedding is different.

Every wedding tells its own story.

And this one reminded me that the best stories are nearly always about the people, not the plans.
