When the Irish Charm Works – A Wedding Story That Starts With a Laugh

A Jaunty Ride Through Killarney – Holly & Paul’s Wedding at Muckross Hotel & Spa

When Holly first emailed me, it started off casual. “James, I’m marrying an Irish man in Muckross Hotel & Spa and wondering if you’re available?”
To which I replied – “Firstly, I’m sorry about that. Marrying an Irish lad? He must’ve used the full dose of Irish charm on you abroad!”
We laughed, booked the date, and that was that.

And that simple laugh at the beginning — it carried through every moment of this wedding. From the very first smile to the last tear of joy, this wasn’t just a wedding. It was a walk through one of the most beautiful corners of the world with two soulmates who genuinely couldn’t stop smiling at each other.

A Warm May Morning in The Kingdom of Kerry

Ireland has been basking in one of the warmest, brightest Mays in recent memory. As I drove into Killarney, winding through the National Park toward the Muckross Hotel & Spa, it felt like the whole of County Kerry was putting on a show just for these two.
The sky was clear, the sun was blazing, and the mountains in the distance stood proud in that golden morning light. The drive, just 40 minutes from my door thanks to the new bypass, was pure serenity.

By the time I arrived, I already knew – today was going to be one of those special ones.

Meeting Paul – City Boy Gone Country

I met Paul in the hotel, tall, confident, a pure Dub standing at 6’4”. Over breakfast with his family, we chatted briefly. He looked calm, relaxed. The kind of guy who didn’t need much fuss. Easy going, whatever, that was Paul, Struck me as a guy who loved the city life at one time, but talking to him during the day, he loves nothing more now than living in the country side, waking up at 4am, and going for a jog or a walk with his trusted sidekick Bentley his beloved dog with him. He has settled into the quiet life.

Turns out, the guy who once thrived in the chaos of Dublin now finds his peace at dawn in the countryside. Yea I believe Holly did that. She softened him. Completed him. A beautiful life to live when you can get up before the rest of the world, take your fateful companion with you on a jog or a walk and relax in the comfort of just been you.

The Plan: A Jaunty Cart, A Wedding Dress, and a Few Hundred Tourists

The plan was simple. Meet at 12:15pm. Take a Jaunty Cart from Muckross Hotel down to Muckross House for photos. Stop at Muckross Abbey on the way back. Then ceremony at 3:25pm.

I met Pádraig and his horse Sally outside the hotel – both legends in their own right. Before long, the elevator doors opened, and out stepped Paul & Holly. The look on their families’ faces said it all. There were smiles, hugs, a few gasps – Holly’s dress was glowing in the sunshine.

We all stepped aboard the Jaunty Cart – the bride, groom, best man, bridesmaid, and myself up front with Pádraig. The breeze hit, and off we went through Killarney National Park, laughter echoing off the trees.

Muckross House Wedding Portraits – Tourists Turned Cheerleaders

As we approached the grand old estate of Muckross House, it became clear – we weren’t alone. The grounds were packed. Tourists from all over the world were wandering about, cameras slung around necks. And as Holly stepped out of the cart, her dress glistening in the midday sun, those same tourists turned their cameras on her.

I’d warned them this might happen. Paul laughed, I said guys ye will be on billboards all across the world now, we all laughed,

From every angle, people were congratulating them. Cheering. Taking photos. And rather than feel shy or awkward, Holly and Paul leaned into it. Their smiles were infectious. Their love – impossible to ignore. They weren’t posing. They were just being themselves. Hand in hand. Laughing. So proud.

At one point, we were walking the back garden of Muckross House when a tourist beside me tapped my shoulder. I stepped aside thinking he wanted to pass. But no – he whipped out a DSLR and began taking his own shots of the couple.
We were howling. “You’re going to be on billboards in Japan by next week,” I told Paul. He just shrugged and laughed.

Abbey Echoes – A Sacred Stop at Muckross Abbey

Next stop, Muckross Abbey – an ancient ruin steeped in silence and time. As I placed them beneath the old stone archways, you could feel something shift. The laughter quieted for a moment. It was peaceful. Reverent.

They held hands. She looked at him like she was still trying to believe this was real. And he? He just looked back at her like there was nowhere else on Earth he’d rather be.

The tourists had followed us here too. But they stayed respectfully back, snapping quiet photos, watching this love story unfold. And again – Paul & Holly were in their own world. Not a care given.

Pulling Pints Before “I Do” – Only in Kerry

Bride and groom at the bar before ceremony JODPhotography

We got back to Muckross Hotel with an hour before the ceremony. What did Paul and Holly want to do? Pull pints.

So off to the bar we went. Behind the counter, they poured perfect Guinness. A quiet moment. Just the two of them. A break before the walk down the aisle. The nerves? None. Not yet.

But that would change.

The Ceremony – Tears, Laughter, and Love

The moment Holly stepped into the ceremony room at Muckross Park Hotel & Spa, something shifted. Her friends and family were standing, waiting. And suddenly, all that confidence gave way to emotion.

Her eyes filled. Paul, ever the calm, smiled as they walked together hand in hand. It was beautiful. Fragile. Real.

The ceremony was simple. No fuss. No fluff. Just raw love in one of Ireland’s most breathtaking wedding venues.

Why Holly & Paul Work – Soulmates in the Kingdom of Kerry

You know that moment when two people look at each other, and nothing else exists? That was Holly and Paul. Whether surrounded by 200 tourists or tucked into a corner of Muckross Abbey, they only saw each other.

He made her laugh. She made him softer. They completed each other.

We had 4 hours. And in that time we captured every emotion: laughter, surprise, pride, awe, joy, quiet, silly, and so much deep, quiet love.

And they ran – yes, ran – through the meadow at Muckross House, hand in hand, like something out of a film. I didn’t have to direct it. They just did it. I said go and they set themselves free in that moment. Because they were having fun. Because they were free. Because they had each other.

A Thank You

Driving home that evening, I was grinning like a fool.
Because weddings like this? They’re more than work. They’re privilege.

To Holly & Paul – thank you for the laughs, for the stories, and for letting me be part of something so full of light.
To the staff at Muckross Park Hotel & Spa, thank you as always for being professional, kind, and sound to the bone.
To your families and friends – thank you for the warmth, the humour, and the craic.
