Do You Need Two Wedding Photographers in Ireland? An Honest Answer
This is one of the most common questions couples ask me. And it’s usually followed by a bit of panic.
Do we need two wedding photographers? Are we missing something if we only book one? Will moments be lost forever?
I’ve photographed weddings all over Ireland for years now, mostly on my own, and I’m going to give you the straight answer — not a sales pitch.

Why Couples Think They Need Two Wedding Photographers
Most couples don’t wake up one morning wanting two photographers. The idea usually comes from venues, blogs, or packages that quietly suggest:
- “You’ll miss things otherwise”
- “Two angles are essential”
- “Big weddings need backup”
That fear is understandable. This is a once-off day. Nobody wants regret. But fear isn’t a great way to plan your wedding photography.

When I’d Actually Recommend a Second Shooter (Straight Talk)
A second wedding photographer in Ireland can cost anywhere from €400 to €1,200, depending on who they are, how experienced they are, and how long they’re needed.
I don’t add a second shooter by default, and I don’t push it for the sake of it. I bring one in for very specific reasons — and only when it genuinely benefits the day.
The main situations where I’d recommend a second shooter are:
- Prep locations far apart: If the groom is getting ready more than about 25 minutes away from the bride, that’s when a second shooter can make sense. Otherwise, I’ll simply photograph the groom when he arrives at the church or venue — simple and stress-free.
- Very large weddings: If you’re talking 300–500 guests and the couple have gone all out, I’ll bring in a second photographer purely because of the sheer numbers.
Outside of those situations, one well-experienced wedding photographer is more than enough.
I cover weddings on my own every week. I move fast, I read moments before they happen, and I’m usually clocking 15,000 to 20,000 steps on a wedding day. That kind of coverage handles 99.9% of Irish weddings without anything being missed.
In time, I’d love for my son to join me. When that happens, he won’t be “just” a second shooter — he’ll be more than capable of stepping in for any of the situations above. Until then, I only add another photographer when it truly adds value.
What a Second Wedding Photographer Actually Does
A second photographer usually:
- Photographs one partner while the other is getting ready
- Covers guests during the ceremony
- Offers an extra angle during key moments
- Helps with very large guest counts
That sounds useful — and sometimes it is. But it’s not automatically necessary.

When Two Wedding Photographers Make Sense in Ireland
There are situations where a second photographer genuinely helps:
- Very large weddings (180+ guests)
- Two far-apart prep locations with strict timelines
- Huge venues where movement takes time
- Couples who want constant guest coverage
In those cases, two photographers can reduce pressure.

When One Experienced Photographer Is More Than Enough
Here’s the part most sites won’t tell you.
For the majority of Irish weddings — especially relaxed, real ones — one experienced wedding photographer is plenty.
- Small to medium guest counts
- One main venue
- Couples who care more about moments than poses
- Timelines with breathing room
I shoot like someone who’s done this hundreds of times. I anticipate moments before they happen. That’s more valuable than an extra camera.
One vs Two Wedding Photographers: The Honest Difference
Two photographers don’t double your story. They just split it.
With one photographer, you get:
- One clear vision
- Consistent style
- No competing directions
- A calm presence you trust
With two photographers, you gain coverage — but you lose intimacy. Neither option is wrong. It depends on you.

What About Missing Moments?
This is the biggest fear. And it’s mostly unfounded.
I don’t chase everything. I watch people. I read rooms. I know when something is about to happen.
That’s experience. Not numbers.
Cost Difference: One vs Two Wedding Photographers in Ireland
A second photographer in Ireland usually adds anywhere from €400 to €1200.
That money doesn’t magically improve your photos. It just increases coverage.
For many couples, that budget is better spent on:
- More time
- A better album
- Less stress on the day
Small Weddings & Elopements: Two Photographers Rarely Make Sense
For small weddings, elopements, and intimate days, two photographers often feel intrusive.
One calm, experienced photographer blends in. Two can change the energy.
If you’re planning something small, this is almost always a one-photographer job.

My Honest Advice as a One-Man Wedding Photographer
I work alone by choice. Not because I have to — because it works.
It keeps things simple. It keeps things calm. And couples relax faster when they’re not being surrounded by cameras.
If I think you need a second photographer, I’ll tell you. If you don’t, I won’t upsell you out of fear.
Why Couples Book Me Without a Second Photographer
Couples book me because:
- I don’t stage or interrupt
- I read moments before they happen
- I’ve shot weddings in every condition Ireland throws at you
- I stay calm when timelines slip
That’s what actually protects your memories.
