Limerick Wedding Photo Locations – What Actually Works (Local Advice, Timing & Reality)
Limerick is one of the most underestimated counties in Ireland for wedding photography. Couples often think of it as a stopover between Cork and Clare, or they focus only on Adare Manor and move on. That’s a mistake.
If you know where to go, when to go, and what to avoid, Limerick delivers calm light, space to breathe, and locations that still feel local rather than overrun. This guide isn’t a highlight reel. It’s written from real experience photographing weddings and elopements across County Limerick in all conditions.
Below you’ll find the places that actually work, the reality of crowds and timing, when weather becomes an issue, and why some popular-looking spots don’t hold up on a wedding day. I’ve also included Google Map pins for every location so you can save them and understand distances before the day.
Understanding Limerick as a Wedding Photography Location
Why Limerick Is Often Misunderstood
Limerick doesn’t sell itself loudly. It doesn’t have the instant postcard drama of Kerry or the coastal pull of West Cork. What it offers instead is balance: historic estates, quiet countryside, lakes, woodland, and villages that still function as real places rather than tourist stops.
This balance matters on a wedding day. You’re not chasing ten locations. You’re trying to get meaningful photos without stress, long drives, or fighting crowds. Limerick allows that when planned properly.
Crowds, Traffic, and Reality
Outside of Adare and the city centre, crowds in Limerick are generally manageable. That doesn’t mean empty, but it does mean predictable. Traffic builds around commuter times, and certain heritage spots draw visitors late morning to mid-afternoon.
Early mornings and later evenings are consistently quieter, and many of the strongest locations are within short driving distances of each other. This makes Limerick ideal for couples who want a relaxed pace rather than rushing between stops.
Permits and What You Actually Need
For most public outdoor locations in Limerick, couples taking personal photos do not need a permit. If you’re hiring a professional photographer and the location is managed by a local authority or heritage body, permission may be required depending on the site.
This is always checked in advance. Limerick is refreshingly straightforward compared to some national park areas, but assumptions cause stress. Planning avoids that entirely.
Weather and Light in Limerick
Limerick weather is changeable, but generally less extreme than exposed coastal counties. Wind is lower inland, and tree cover is plentiful. Light can be soft and even for long periods, especially in spring and autumn.
This makes Limerick forgiving. Rain doesn’t immediately ruin plans, and there are more sheltered options than couples expect.
Safety, Access, and Walking Distances
One overlooked benefit of Limerick locations is accessibility. Parking is usually close, paths are walkable, and steep climbs are rare. This matters for wedding attire, older family members, and time constraints.
Limerick Wedding Photo Locations That Actually Work
Adare Village & Surroundings
Adare is beautiful, but it’s busy. The village itself is most workable early in the morning or outside peak tourist season. The real strength of Adare photography comes from its surrounding lanes, river edges, and quieter green spaces rather than the main street.
Best time: early morning or evening
Reality: busy mid-day, plan around it

Curraghchase Forest Park
Curraghchase is one of Limerick’s strongest all-round locations. Woodland, open parkland, ruins, and lakes all in one area. It works exceptionally well in poor weather due to tree cover and varied backdrops within short walking distances.
Best time: mid-morning or evening
Why it works: variety without pressure

Lough Gur
Lough Gur is one of the most atmospheric locations in Limerick. Rolling hills, open views, and ancient stone structures give it a timeless feel. Wind can be a factor, but on calm days it’s exceptional.
Best time: late afternoon into evening
Watch for: wind and sudden weather shifts
📍 Save Lough Gur on Google Maps
University of Limerick Grounds
The UL campus offers riverside walks, modern architecture, bridges, and open green spaces. It’s surprisingly versatile and often overlooked. Weekends are quieter, making it ideal for relaxed photo sessions.

King John’s Castle (Reality Check)
Iconic but busy. The surrounding area works better than the castle grounds themselves. Timing is everything here, and expectations need to be realistic.

Rural Limerick Backroads & Estates
Often the best photos in Limerick happen where there’s no name on Google Maps. Quiet lanes, tree tunnels, and private estate approaches offer calm, natural settings with zero crowds.

Prestige
The album I keep coming back to
A wedding album should feel as good as the photographs inside it.
Forever and Eternity include a handcrafted 30 × 30cm / 12 × 12" wedding album, designed around up to 80 photographs from your day. You’ll have a choice of finishes, but if you ask me which one I’d choose, I’ll nearly always point you towards the Acrylic Prestige.
The crystal-clear acrylic cover gives the photograph real depth and the lay-flat design lets the story flow beautifully across the page. It feels substantial without being fussy, and it’s exactly the kind of album I want my couples to still be taking down from the shelf years from now.
No long wait afterwards
See a little of it while it still feels fresh.
I aim to share a small selection of sneak peeks as soon as I can after your wedding. If I’m not photographing another wedding the following day, that can often mean the very next day. Your complete gallery is delivered within 4–6 weeks, although, as many of my reviews mention, it’s often considerably sooner.
Your photographs are yours to keep
Download them. Back them up. Keep them safe.
Your private online gallery makes it easy to view, share and download your photographs in high resolution. Intimate and Moments galleries remain online for 3 months, while Memories, Forever and Eternity galleries remain online for 6 months. You can download as often as you like while your gallery is live. Once it arrives, I always recommend downloading the complete collection and keeping at least one extra backup somewhere safe, as the online gallery isn’t intended as permanent cloud storage.

Make it yours
Enhance Your Collection

Engagement Session
A relaxed session before the wedding, with no wedding-day timetable. A chance to get comfortable in front of the camera and come away with photographs you actually like.

Beautiful handcrafted versions of your wedding album for the people who will want to sit down, turn the pages and relive the day with you.

Why Choose JOD Photography for a Limerick Wedding?
Photographing weddings in Limerick isn’t about chasing landmarks. It’s about knowing when locations work, when they don’t, and how to keep the day calm even when plans change.
I work across Limerick regularly — from Adare and the city to rural venues and quiet countryside. That local experience means less rushing, fewer crowds, and photos that feel natural rather than forced.
Couples choose me because they want honest advice, relaxed direction, and photography that fits the day — not the other way around.
How I Actually Photograph Your Wedding Day
I’m not the photographer who arrives with a clipboard and spends the day trying to control everything.
That would drive me mad, never mind you.
For probably 95% of your wedding day, I’m simply photographing what’s happening.
Your family arriving. The madness of the morning. Someone trying to figure out a buttonhole. Your grandmother watching quietly from the corner. The lads taking the piss out of each other. Kids tearing around the place. Tears during the ceremony. Hugs afterwards. The drinks reception. Speeches. Dancing.
That’s the wedding.
And that’s where most of your photographs come from.
The other 5% is where I take the wheel for a little while.
We’ll get your family photographs. We’ll have a bit of craic with the bridal party. And I’ll take you both away for a short time to create the photographs I think deserve a place on your walls or across the opening pages of your wedding album.
Even then, I don’t suddenly turn into a drill sergeant.
I’ll put you in the right light. I might move you a few feet because I’ve spotted a better background. I’ll give you something simple to do and then let the two of you take over.
Because I’m not really looking for the perfect pose.
I’m looking for what happens just after it.
The laugh when something feels ridiculous. The look you give each other. The little comment I can’t hear. The reaction. That’s normally where the photograph is.
And I work the same way with your guests.
I read a room very quickly.
Give me an hour and I’ll know who the characters are. I’ll have found the uncle with the huge laugh, the aunt who’s ready for the dance floor before dinner, the quiet grandparent watching everything, the emotional ones and the group that are going to bring the craic all day.
I talk to people.
I laugh with them.
I might be sitting beside your grandmother getting a story one minute and chasing a four-year-old around looking for a photograph the next.
That’s deliberate.
I don’t want your guests spending the day thinking “the photographer is over there.”
I want them comfortable enough that they’ll shout:
“James, come here and get this!”
Because once people stop worrying about the camera, everything changes.
Even the photographs people normally dread, the family groups and bridal party photographs, don’t have to feel stiff. We’ll get the photograph your parents want, absolutely. But we’ll have a laugh doing it.
Then I’m gone again.
Back into the crowd. Watching. Listening. Looking for the next little thing happening somewhere nobody else has noticed.
I don’t need to control your wedding to photograph it properly.
I just need to know when to step in, when to create, and when to get out of the way.
That’s basically how I photograph a wedding.
