If you're planning a wedding anywhere in Munster or Ireland and want a photographer who can adapt to your day rather than force it into one particular style, you're in the right place. Documentary, candid, natural, editorial, creative or traditional when the moment calls for it — the photography follows your wedding, not the other way around.
Discover JOD PhotographyHow Long Do Wedding Photos Take? A Wedding Photographer Explains
One of the questions couples ask me is:
How long do wedding photos actually take?
And it’s a fair question.
Because nobody wants to spend half their wedding day standing in a field while their photographer searches for another pose.
Hi, I’m James, owner of JOD Photography. I’ve photographed weddings all over Cork, Kerry, Munster and Ireland, and I’ve learned something fairly simple over the years.
Your wedding photographs are important. But so is actually being at your wedding.
I don’t want to pull you away from your family and friends for an hour and a half unless that’s exactly what you want.
My job is to work around the day, find the light, read what’s happening and get what we need without turning your wedding into one long photoshoot.
So, how much time should you actually allow?

How Long Do Wedding Photos Take on the Day?
There isn’t one answer because wedding photography happens throughout the entire day.
I don’t arrive, take photographs for an hour and disappear.
I’m photographing from the morning preparations through the ceremony, family photographs, couple portraits, bridal party, reception and evening celebrations.
Most of that doesn’t require any time from you at all.
I’m simply there documenting it.
The parts couples really mean when they ask this question are usually:
How long will the family photos take?
How long will we be away for our couple photographs?
And:
Are we going to miss half the drinks reception?
No. At least, not with me
Real Reviews From Real Couples
The best way to understand what it's like having me photograph your wedding is to hear it from the couples themselves. These are genuine Google reviews from weddings across Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Clare and beyond.

Timmy O'Brien
James made us feel completely at ease from the very beginning. Everyone from the wedding was talking about him afterwards. Professional, relaxed and brilliant to have around all day. He is exactly the photographer you want beside you on your wedding day.

Bríd & Ger Counihan
James blended in effortlessly, brought the craic and made everyone feel relaxed. Every laugh, embrace and tear was captured naturally. The sneak peeks arrived the next morning and our gallery was delivered incredibly quickly. We'd recommend James in a heartbeat.

Sharon Murray
We are normally nervous in front of cameras but James made us feel so relaxed that we forgot the camera was even there. The photographs are incredible and we couldn't recommend him highly enough.

Anne Marie & Stuart
James captured every emotion of our wedding day with honesty and heart. The album is stunning and the photographs tell our story beautifully. His work is real, natural and unforgettable.

Megan O'Brien
From the moment James walked in everyone was laughing. Nothing felt posed and every smile was genuine. The surprise video and beautiful photographs were more than we ever expected.

Laura Barry
James felt like another friend in the room. He kept everyone relaxed, captured beautiful candid moments and delivered sneak peeks within hours. Our guests are still talking about him.

Morning Preparations Don’t Need to Become a Photoshoot
When I arrive in the morning, I normally already know my couple fairly well.
There have been messages going backwards and forwards, probably a few bad jokes, and usually a video call somewhere along the way.
So I don’t arrive at the door and suddenly start directing everybody.
I settle into what’s already happening.
I’m watching the room. I’m looking for the nerves, the laughter, the kids running around, Mam fixing something for the tenth time, Dad trying to look remarkably calm when he isn’t.
Most of the morning is documentary wedding photography.
There may be a few minutes when I’ll suggest moving towards a window because the light is beautiful, or I’ll photograph the dress, rings and some portraits.
But I’m not trying to manufacture an Instagram-perfect morning.
The morning already has a story. I just need to see it.

The Ceremony Takes No Extra Time
I normally arrive at the ceremony at least 20 minutes before it begins.
That gives me time to photograph guests arriving, people greeting each other, the ceremony space and all those little moments happening before you arrive.
Then I photograph the ceremony as it unfolds.
There’s no additional photography time here.
You’re getting married.
I’m documenting it.
Simple enough.

After the Ceremony, I Usually Do the Family Photos First
This is one thing I’ve learned from photographing a lot of weddings.
Get the family photographs done before everyone reaches the bar.
Because once Uncle Paddy has found the Guinness, retrieving him can become an entirely separate photography assignment.
So whenever the wedding allows for it, I like to go straight into the important family photographs after the ceremony.
Everyone is already there.
They’re dressed.
They’re together.
And most importantly, we know where they are.
If we have the family list organised beforehand, this can move surprisingly quickly.

How Long Do Family Wedding Photos Take?
For a normal family photograph list, I’d generally allow around 15 to 25 minutes.
It depends entirely on how many combinations you want.
Parents.
Grandparents.
Brothers and sisters.
Immediate family.
Extended family.
And whatever combinations matter to you.
If you’ve handed me a list containing 47 different family combinations, we’re obviously going to be there longer. There are limits to my supernatural powers.
But I don’t drag family formals out unnecessarily.
These photographs matter.
They’re traditional wedding photography, and some of them may become far more important as the years pass.
So we’ll get them done properly.
Then everyone can head for the bar.
Including Uncle Paddy.

How Long Do Bridal Party Photos Take?
Again, I don’t need forever.
Usually 10 to 20 minutes is plenty for me.
And these aren’t necessarily stiff photographs of everyone standing in a perfectly straight line.
I’ll get the photographs we need, but I’ll also get people moving, talking, laughing and messing around.
The bridal party photographs should feel like the people who are actually in them.
If your friends are lunatics, I’m not going to suddenly pretend they’re members of the royal family.

How Long Do Couple Wedding Photos Take?
This is the big one.
For most weddings, I generally want around 15 to 20 minutes with the couple.
Sometimes we need less.
Sometimes the location and light are so good that we’ll keep going.
And if a couple tells me:
“James, we want to disappear for an hour and create something spectacular.”
I’m all in.
But that’s not what most couples want.
Most want beautiful photographs and their wedding.
So I work quickly.
I spent about 25 years photographing landscapes before wedding photography became such a huge part of my life, and that still influences how I see locations.
I’m constantly looking at light, foreground, background, shape and composition.
I’m looking for the photograph that could end up above the fireplace.
Or the album cover.
And then I want another one good enough to make you argue about which one should be the album cover.

What If We’re Awkward in Front of the Camera?
Welcome to about 90% of the couples who contact me.
I hear some version of:
“We’re terrible in photographs.”
“We don’t know how to pose.”
Or my favourite:
“We’re allergic to cameras.”
Grand.
You don’t need to know how to pose.
That’s my problem.
I might place you somewhere because the light is right, but then I’m looking for something real to happen within that space.
I’ll talk to you.
I’ll probably take the piss a little.
I’ll get you moving.
And somewhere in amongst all that, the guard comes down and the real laugh appears.
That’s the photograph I’m waiting for.

Should We Leave the Reception for Sunset Photographs?
If there’s a spectacular sunset outside, I will probably come looking for you.
I’m not going to lie. 😂
But you don’t need to disappear for half an hour.
Sometimes five or ten minutes is enough.
The light is doing most of the heavy lifting.
I already know what I’m looking for.
We go outside, create the photographs and get you back to the party.
And occasionally Ireland even provides the sunset we ordered.
What Happens If It Rains?
We adapt.
It’s Ireland.
If wedding photographers waited for perfect weather here we’d have about four working days a year.
Rain doesn’t automatically mean spending longer on photographs.
I’ll look for covered areas, windows, doorways, architecture and good indoor light.
Sometimes we’ll wait ten minutes and get a break in the weather.
Sometimes we’ll use the rain.
Sometimes I’ll use flash and create something completely different.
The schedule shouldn’t collapse because the weather changed.

How Much Time Should We Put Aside for Wedding Photographs?
For a typical wedding, a rough guide would be:
| Photographs | Typical Time |
|---|---|
| Family photographs | 15–25 minutes |
| Bridal party | 10–20 minutes |
| Main couple photographs | 10–20 minutes |
| Sunset/evening photographs | 5–10 minutes |
| Creative night photograph | 5–10 minutes |
But don’t add all those numbers together and think I’m stealing an hour and a half from you.
Some overlap.
Some happen naturally.
Some happen at completely different points in the day.
And plenty of weddings don’t need every one of them.
I adapt the photography to the wedding rather than forcing the wedding to adapt to my photography.
That’s the important difference.
What Wedding Photos Actually Take the Longest?
Usually it isn’t taking the photograph.
It’s gathering people.
That’s why planning the family photographs beforehand makes such a difference.
If I know we need:
Bride + parents
Groom + parents
Couple + both parents
Couple + siblings
Couple + grandparents
we can fly through them.
If we’re standing outside trying to decide who should be in photographs while somebody searches the hotel for a missing brother, that’s where time disappears.
A simple family photo list can save a surprising amount of your wedding day.

How Long Does It Take to Get Your Wedding Photos Back?
There’s another meaning behind “How long do wedding photos take?”
How long after the wedding will you actually receive them?
That depends on your photographer, the time of year, the number of photographs taken and how the photographer handles editing.
And this is something you should ask before booking.
Don’t assume every photographer works to the same delivery schedule.
Ask:
- What’s your normal turnaround time?
- Does that change during peak wedding season?
- Will we receive preview photographs?
- Approximately how many finished photographs will we receive?
- How are the final photographs delivered?
A professional photographer should be able to explain their own process clearly.
Don’t Build Your Wedding Day Around Your Photographer
This is probably the biggest thing I’d tell any couple planning their wedding timeline.
Leave enough time for photographs.
But don’t design the entire day around them.
You should be talking to your guests.
Having a drink.
Eating the food you’ve spent a fortune on.
Laughing with people you might not have seen in years.
And occasionally wondering where one particular relative has disappeared to.
That’s the wedding.
My photography happens around that.
There will be moments when I direct things because direction is needed.
Family photographs need organisation.
Portraits sometimes need direction.
A big landscape or cinematic photograph needs the right position and composition.
But once I’ve got what I need, I’ll send you back to your wedding.
Then I’ll go back to watching.
Because while we’re worrying about photographs, there are hundreds of little things happening around us.
And very often, they’re the photographs you’ll eventually love most.
Frequently Asked Questions About Wedding Photography Times
How long should wedding photos take between the ceremony and reception?
For most of my weddings, I don’t need an hour or more alone with the couple. Family, bridal party and couple photographs can be organised efficiently, and couple portraits can also be split into shorter sessions throughout the day.
Let’s Get the Craic Started
Whether you're planning a massive session in Cork, an elopement in Kerry, or a celebration somewhere further down the road, tell me everything. Share the details, the venue, the general plans, and exactly how camera-allergic you both are.

How long do family wedding photos normally take?
Around 15 to 25 minutes is realistic for a sensible family list. Large numbers of combinations will naturally take longer.
How long should we allow for bride and groom photos?
I generally work with around 20 to 30 minutes for the main couple session, although every wedding is different.
Can wedding couple photos be done in 20 minutes?
Yes. With a good location, good light and a photographer who knows what they want to create, you can get a lot done in 20 minutes.
Do we need an hour for wedding portraits?
No. Some couples want an extended portrait session and that’s completely fine, but it isn’t compulsory.
When is the best time for family photos at a wedding?
I normally prefer to photograph the important family groups shortly after the ceremony while everyone is still together and easy to find.
Are sunset wedding photos worth leaving the reception for?
If the light is beautiful, yes. But it doesn’t need to take long. Often five or ten minutes is plenty to create something completely different.
What happens if our wedding runs late?
We adapt. Wedding timelines move constantly. An experienced photographer should be able to prioritise what’s important rather than allowing photography to hold up the entire day.
Planning Your Wedding Photography in Cork, Munster or Ireland?
I photograph weddings throughout Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Clare, Tipperary, Waterford and across Ireland.
My approach is simple.
I’ll organise things when they need organising.
I’ll direct when a photograph needs direction.
I’ll shut up and disappear into the background when the moment needs nothing from me.
And I’ll try not to keep you away from the bar for too long.
Because years from now, I want you to have photographs that show what your wedding looked like.
But more importantly, I want them to remind you what it felt like.
