Wedding photography styles are usually presented as if you have to pick one.
Documentary. Natural. Candid. Editorial. Creative. Traditional.
But after photographing hundreds of weddings, I don’t think a real wedding fits neatly into any one of those boxes.
I’m James from JOD Photography, a wedding photographer based in County Cork and photographing weddings across Cork, Kerry, Munster and throughout Ireland. Documentary photography has always been a big part of how I work, but it isn’t the only way I photograph a wedding.
Because a wedding changes constantly.
One minute your dad is seeing you in your dress for the first time and the best thing I can possibly do is shut up, stay out of the way and capture it.
Twenty minutes later we’re organising a family photograph.
Later again I might find beautiful light and give the two of you some direction.
And when evening arrives, I might use flash, architecture, weather or whatever else we’ve been given to create something completely different.
That’s why I don’t believe your wedding should be forced into my photography style.
My photography should adapt to your wedding.
Documentary Wedding Photography
This is probably the part of my photography people know best.
Documentary wedding photography is about recognising a moment before it’s gone.
The laugh nobody expected. Your mam watching you when you aren’t looking. Someone wiping away a tear during the ceremony. Children doing whatever children bloody well want to do. Your friends absolutely losing it during the speeches.
None of that needs direction from me.
In fact, direction would probably ruin it.
So I watch.
After years of photographing weddings, you start recognising when something is about to happen. Sometimes it’s obvious. Sometimes it’s nothing more than a glance across a room.
Those photographs matter enormously to me.
The longer I do this job, the more I’ve realised that some of the photographs people return to aren’t necessarily the ones anybody planned.
They’re the ones that lasted a fraction of a second.
Your site already strongly establishes this documentary foundation and describes the overwhelming majority of a wedding as candid coverage.
Candid Wedding Photography
Candid and documentary photography overlap, but I think there’s a small difference.
Documentary is about telling the story.
Candid photography is often about the people inside it.
I love watching what happens around the obvious photograph.
Everyone watches the couple cutting the cake.
I’m also watching the people behind them.
Everyone watches whoever is giving the speech.
I’m watching the person they’re talking about.
And while everybody is looking in one direction, quite often there’s something brilliant happening in the other.
That’s where experience comes into it.
You can’t manufacture those photographs.
You have to notice them.
Natural Wedding Photography
Natural doesn’t mean no direction.
That’s important.
Nearly every couple tells me some version of:
“James, we’re terrible in front of a camera.”
You’re not.
You’re just not professional models, and nobody should expect you to be.
For natural wedding portraits, I’ll help when you need me.
I might move you towards better light. I’ll give you something to do rather than asking you to stand there wondering where your hands are supposed to go. I might change the angle, background or position.
Then I’ll let the two of you take over.
The idea isn’t to make a photograph look like I did nothing.
The idea is to give enough direction that eventually you stop thinking about the direction.

Creative Wedding Photography
Now we’re into the fun stuff.
Sometimes a location, weather, reflection, sunset, building or shaft of light gives me an idea.
And I’ll use it.
Creative wedding photography is different from documenting something that already exists. Sometimes we’re deliberately creating the photograph together.
That might mean working with the landscape in Kerry, finding a strong composition around a Cork wedding venue, using a reflection, working with movement or bringing in flash after dark.
Irish weather can be particularly good for this.
Yes, I said it.
The weather that had everyone checking seventeen different weather apps for the previous week can give us dramatic skies, beautiful light and photographs we wouldn’t have made on a perfect blue-sky afternoon.
I’ve never wanted every photograph in a gallery to look the same.
Sometimes beautiful is quiet.
Sometimes it needs a bit of drama.

Editorial Wedding Photography
Editorial wedding photography means something quite simple to me.
It’s a photograph that wouldn’t look out of place printed across the pages of a magazine.
There’s a trend at the moment to describe editorial wedding photography as black and white images, direct flash, a bit of grain and a particular fashion-led look. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that style, but I’ve never believed that’s what makes a photograph editorial.
For me, it’s about creating an image with presence.
The location matters. The light matters. The composition matters. Your dress, your suit, the architecture, the landscape and how I place you within all of that can matter.
And yes, this is one of the times during a wedding when I’ll direct you more.
I might move you, change your position, work with the light or build the photograph around something I’ve spotted. We’re not waiting for a moment to happen here. We’re deliberately creating the image together.
But I’m not creating it because I think it’ll look good on Instagram for a few days.
I’m creating it because I want you to print it.
I want to make photographs that deserve more than a scroll on a phone. Photographs you’d happily print large, put on the wall of your home and still stop to look at years from now.
That’s what editorial wedding photography means to me.
Not following a trend. Not copying a particular edit. Creating a photograph worthy of being published, printed and lived with.
And then we get back to the wedding.

Once it arrives, I always recommend downloading the complete collection and keeping at least one extra backup somewhere safe, as the online gallery isn’t intended as permanent cloud storage.

Family & Traditional Wedding Photographs
Yes.
I take the family photographs.
Documentary photographer or not, your mam is getting that photograph.
And twenty years from now it could be one of the most important photographs in the entire gallery.
I think family photographs sometimes get treated almost apologetically when photographers talk about style.
I don’t see them that way.
They’re part of the historical record of your family.
So we’ll organise them properly, get everyone where they need to be, make them look good and get them done without eating half your drinks reception.
This is one of those moments when I stop being invisible and take control.
That’s part of adapting too.
Creative Flash & After-Dark Wedding Photography
Once daylight disappears, I don’t pack away every idea and head for the bar.
Flash gives us another completely different way of working.
It can freeze movement, separate you from a background, make rain visible, transform an ordinary location or create a dramatic portrait that couldn’t have been made using available light alone.
Again, I don’t want to use it just because I can.
The photograph has to suit it.
Sometimes the right answer is beautiful natural light.
Sometimes it’s soft available light.
Sometimes it’s a bloody great flash.
They’re tools.
Your site already explicitly states that you work with both natural light and off-camera flash, so this section gives that existing capability a proper home.
So What Is My Wedding Photography Style?
If you absolutely forced me to put a label on it, I’d probably say:
Documentary at heart. Natural with people. Creative when the opportunity appears. Editorial-inspired when we deliberately want to create something.
But even that doesn’t tell the whole story.
Because your wedding might need something completely different from the wedding I photographed last Saturday.
Different people.
Different personalities.
Different venue.
Different weather.
Different light.
Different energy.
That’s the bit I think gets lost when we talk about wedding photography styles as rigid categories.
A photographer doesn’t need to spend an entire wedding behaving like a documentary photographer because they put “documentary” on their website.
And they don’t need to turn every ten minutes into an editorial shoot because they use the word “editorial.”
There are times to observe.
There are times to help.
There are times to organise.
And there are times to create.
Knowing when to do each one is the important part.
The Style Follows The Moment
This is probably the simplest way I can explain how I photograph weddings now.
When the moment is real, I leave it alone.
When you need direction, I’ll give it.
When the light is beautiful, we’ll use it.
When the photograph needs structure, I’ll create it.
When your family needs organising, I’ll organise them.
And when the craic kicks off, I’ll get out of the bloody way.
I don’t want you looking through your finished wedding gallery and seeing one photography technique repeated 500 times.
I want you to see your wedding.
Some photographs will be raw.
Some quiet.
Some funny.
Some beautifully simple.
Some deliberately created.
And hopefully there’ll be a few where you wonder how the hell I even saw them.
Documentary. Candid. Natural. Creative. Editorial-inspired.
They’re tools, not rules.
Your wedding comes first.
Which Wedding Photography Style Is Right For You?
You might not actually need to choose.
If you love genuine moments but also want beautiful portraits, you can have both.
If you hate posing but still want a few polished photographs of the two of you, that’s completely normal.
If you want your family documented naturally but also want the photograph of everyone together for the mantelpiece, we’ll do both.
And if the evening suddenly gives us ridiculous light, rain, fog or something completely unexpected, we’ll use that too.
The point isn’t choosing between documentary wedding photography, natural wedding photography, creative wedding photography or editorial wedding photography.
It’s finding a photographer who understands which approach works when.
