So has photography.
Today, couples want something more. They want photographs that feel natural and honest, but they also want images that wouldn’t look out of place in the pages of a magazine.
That’s where editorial wedding photography comes in.
But here’s the thing…
Editorial doesn’t mean spending half your wedding day posing.
At least, it doesn’t for me.
My Editorial Style
When people hear the words editorial wedding photography, they often picture fashion magazines. Perfect poses. Serious expressions. Everything carefully directed.
That’s never really been me.
My version of editorial is built around the world that’s already there.
I love using the landscape, the architecture and the changing light to create photographs that feel bigger than the moment itself. A dramatic Irish sky. A quiet country road. A tiny white chapel surrounded by trees. A field stretching towards the horizon. Rather than letting those places sit quietly in the background, I make them part of the story.
I often step back rather than move closer.
I want you to see where you were.
I want you to remember how small you felt standing beneath an enormous sky, how the wind caught the veil, or how the evening light wrapped itself around the two of you. Those details become just as important as the kiss or the smile.
For me, editorial photography isn’t about making couples look like models.
It’s about creating photographs that feel cinematic while still being completely honest.
Some of my favourite images are the simplest ones. A couple standing alone in a huge landscape. A doorway framing a quiet moment. A church that suddenly feels grand because of the way the light falls across it. Sometimes I’ll walk fifty metres away because I know the wider scene tells a stronger story than a close-up ever could.
The people are always the heart of the photograph.
The landscape simply gives that story room to breathe.
And that’s probably the biggest difference in how I approach editorial wedding photography.
I don’t create photographs that could have been taken anywhere in the world.
I create photographs that could only have been made there, on your wedding day, in that exact place, with that exact light.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that style.
It’s just not mine.
My idea of editorial is much simpler.
If a photograph is strong enough that you could imagine seeing it across two pages of a wedding magazine…
If it tells a story.
If it has beautiful light.
If it has thoughtful composition.
If it makes you stop for just a little longer than the next photograph…
Then, to me, it belongs there.
Because editorial isn’t about copying magazine photography.

Editorial wedding photography takes inspiration from fashion magazines, cinema and storytelling.
It’s about beautiful light.

Thoughtful framing.

The best editorial photographs don’t shout for attention.

Years later, they still feel beautiful because they aren’t built around a passing trend.
Editorial Doesn’t Mean Pretending
One of the biggest misconceptions about editorial wedding photography is that everything has to be staged.
It doesn’t.
Some of my favourite editorial photographs happened completely naturally.
A bride adjusting her veil before walking down the aisle.
A groom standing quietly by a window, taking a deep breath.
A couple walking through a castle garden, completely unaware that the evening light has just become perfect.
Nothing forced.
Nothing fake.
Just recognising a beautiful moment and presenting it in the most elegant way possible.
My Favourite Editorial Tool Isn’t My Camera
People often ask what lens I use.
Or what camera.
The truth is…
My favourite tool isn’t either of those.
It’s light.
Good light can turn an ordinary hotel corridor into something extraordinary.
A staircase becomes a fashion backdrop.
A doorway becomes a frame.
A single beam of evening sunlight can completely transform an image.
I spend the entire day watching how the light changes because it often tells me where the next great photograph will happen before the couple even gets there.

This is probably where I differ from photographers who describe themselves as purely editorial.
If creating one beautiful photograph means missing your grandparents laughing together…
I’m not interested.
If it means keeping you away from your guests for an hour…
It’s not worth it.
Your wedding happens once.
The moments come first.
The editorial portraits fit naturally around them.
Not the other way around.
Creating Editorial Images Without Losing Real Emotion
The challenge isn’t creating a beautiful photograph.
The challenge is creating one that still feels like you.
That’s why I rarely tell couples exactly what to do.
Instead, I’ll give you a simple direction.
Walk together.
Talk to each other.
Take a breath.
Hold hands.
Forget I’m standing there.
Everything else comes naturally.
That’s when elegance and emotion meet.
Beautiful Locations Don’t Create Editorial Photographs
People often think editorial photography depends on photographing weddings in luxury castles or five-star hotels.
Those places certainly help.
But they aren’t what creates the photograph.
I’ve made editorial images beside an ordinary hedge.
Outside a church.
In a tiny hotel corridor.
On a rainy footpath.
In a car park.
The location isn’t the secret.
Seeing possibilities is.
Sometimes I’ll walk ten metres away from where everyone else is standing because I notice a line of light hitting an old stone wall.
That’s the photograph.
Not the location itself.
