If you’re living in Australia and planning to get married in Ireland, this guide is written for you. Whether you’re Irish who emigrated years ago, part of the Irish-Australian community, or an Australian couple choosing Ireland as your wedding destination, planning from the other side of the world can feel daunting.
The distance, time difference, and legal steps often raise questions early on. The reality is far calmer. Irish couples living in Australia plan weddings in Ireland every year — successfully, smoothly, and without constant travel — when they have the right information from the start.
Real Reviews From Real Couples
The best way to understand what it's like having me photograph your wedding is to hear it from the couples themselves. These are genuine Google reviews from weddings across Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Clare and beyond.

Timmy O'Brien
James made us feel completely at ease from the very beginning. Everyone from the wedding was talking about him afterwards. Professional, relaxed and brilliant to have around all day. He is exactly the photographer you want beside you on your wedding day.

Bríd & Ger Counihan
James blended in effortlessly, brought the craic and made everyone feel relaxed. Every laugh, embrace and tear was captured naturally. The sneak peeks arrived the next morning and our gallery was delivered incredibly quickly. We'd recommend James in a heartbeat.

Sharon Murray
We are normally nervous in front of cameras but James made us feel so relaxed that we forgot the camera was even there. The photographs are incredible and we couldn't recommend him highly enough.

Anne Marie & Stuart
James captured every emotion of our wedding day with honesty and heart. The album is stunning and the photographs tell our story beautifully. His work is real, natural and unforgettable.

Megan O'Brien
From the moment James walked in everyone was laughing. Nothing felt posed and every smile was genuine. The surprise video and beautiful photographs were more than we ever expected.

Laura Barry
James felt like another friend in the room. He kept everyone relaxed, captured beautiful candid moments and delivered sneak peeks within hours. Our guests are still talking about him.
Why Ireland Draws People Home (and Pulls Others In)
Humans have been on this island for around 12,500 years. That’s not folklore or romantic guesswork — it’s backed by real evidence. The oldest solid proof comes from a butchered brown bear bone found in Alice and Gwendoline Cave in County Clare, dated to roughly 10,500 BC, just after the ice finally started to retreat.
There are older claims — thirty-odd thousand years and the like — but they’re disputed and not widely accepted. The truth is strong enough without stretching it. By around 9,000 to 10,000 years ago, permanent settlement had properly begun, with Mesolithic hunter-gatherers living here year-round, places like Mount Sandel standing as quiet proof of that continuity.
Since then, people have lived, worked, argued, laughed, told stories, buried their dead, and marked life’s milestones on this rock for thousands of years. Long before borders, paperwork, or the idea of a “destination wedding,” people gathered here to celebrate life.
Ireland isn’t loud about its history. It doesn’t shove it in your face. You feel it instead — in the stone walls, the winding roads, the land that refuses to be straightened or rushed.
We’re not blessed with perfect weather — far from it. But what we are blessed with is something harder to manufacture: warmth that has nothing to do with temperature.
You can walk into almost any pub in Ireland, sit on a high stool for a quick drink, and within seconds someone will be talking to you. Not because they want something — but because that’s who we are. We love the craic. We love stories. We love learning about people. It makes the day go quicker — and it’s something our ancestors have been doing for thousands of years.
The landscape is something many Irish people only truly understand as they get older. When we’re young, we’re busy finding our way. Then one day you stop and look again — the rugged hills, the sweeping shorelines, the colour… the colour is something else entirely.
Ireland holds some of the most natural beauty there is. And yes, the weather can be wild. But when the sun breaks through and you’re standing out in one of those landscapes, a feeling of ease settles over you. A sense of history. A sense of time.
This land has seen ice, hunger, invasion, famine, joy, music, and resilience — and yet it still welcomes. It still gives.
Ireland is the people’s country. It feels like home to those who arrive, and for every Irish person living abroad, it sits quietly in the back of the mind, calling them.
So no — we’re not blessed with perfect weather. We’re blessed with something better. Ireland takes a brave couple — a couple who looks out the window on the morning of their wedding, sees that it’s lashing rain, and says, “Right. Let’s have ya.”
When you embrace Ireland, Ireland always delivers.

WHY IRELAND STILL FEELS LIKE HOME FROM AUSTRALIA
Australia is one of the most common places Irish people have emigrated to over the last 20 years. The lifestyle, weather, and opportunity are appealing — but when it comes to major life moments, Ireland has a way of pulling people home.
For many couples, getting married in Ireland is about:
family
roots
familiarity
meaning
For Australian couples, Ireland offers history, intimacy, and landscapes that feel timeless rather than manufactured. The decision to marry in Ireland is rarely impulsive — it’s deeply considered.

Prestige
The album I keep coming back to
A wedding album should feel as good as the photographs inside it.
Forever and Eternity include a handcrafted 30 × 30cm / 12 × 12" wedding album, designed around up to 80 photographs from your day. You’ll have a choice of finishes, but if you ask me which one I’d choose, I’ll nearly always point you towards the Acrylic Prestige.
The crystal-clear acrylic cover gives the photograph real depth and the lay-flat design lets the story flow beautifully across the page. It feels substantial without being fussy, and it’s exactly the kind of album I want my couples to still be taking down from the shelf years from now.
No long wait afterwards
See a little of it while it still feels fresh.
I aim to share a small selection of sneak peeks as soon as I can after your wedding. If I’m not photographing another wedding the following day, that can often mean the very next day. Your complete gallery is delivered within 4–6 weeks, although, as many of my reviews mention, it’s often considerably sooner.
Your photographs are yours to keep
Download them. Back them up. Keep them safe.
Your private online gallery makes it easy to view, share and download your photographs in high resolution. Intimate and Moments galleries remain online for 3 months, while Memories, Forever and Eternity galleries remain online for 6 months. You can download as often as you like while your gallery is live. Once it arrives, I always recommend downloading the complete collection and keeping at least one extra backup somewhere safe, as the online gallery isn’t intended as permanent cloud storage.

Make it yours
Enhance Your Collection
Start with the collection that suits your day, then add only the things that genuinely matter to you. There’s no need to squeeze your wedding into a package just because that’s how the price list was written.
Talk to Me About Your PlansSecond Photographer
Another pair of eyes on the day. Particularly useful for separate morning preparations, larger weddings and those moments happening in two places at once.
Engagement Session
A relaxed session before the wedding, with no wedding-day timetable. A chance to get comfortable in front of the camera and come away with photographs you actually like.
Parent Albums
Beautiful handcrafted versions of your wedding album for the people who will want to sit down, turn the pages and relive the day with you.

WHO THIS GUIDE IS FOR
This guide is written for:
Irish couples living in Australia planning a wedding back home
Irish-Australian couples honouring family heritage
Australian couples choosing Ireland as a destination wedding
Couples organising everything remotely from Australia
If you’re dealing with distance, time zones, and logistics — this is for you.

PLANNING A WEDDING IN IRELAND FROM AUSTRALIA (REALITY)
Planning from Australia comes down to process, not proximity.
Most couples:
shortlist venues and suppliers online
rely on WhatsApp and email
schedule video calls that suit both time zones
plan one focused trip home (optional)
The 10–11 hour time difference sounds intimidating, but experienced suppliers work around it easily.
Distance doesn’t slow planning — poor communication does.

Let’s Get the Craic Started
Whether you're planning a massive session in Cork, an elopement in Kerry, or a celebration somewhere further down the road, tell me everything. Share the details, the venue, the general plans, and exactly how camera-allergic you both are.
Real Words from Real Couples
“James has a rare ability to make you feel instantly at ease. From our very first conversation, he took the time to understand us and quietly helped plan everything while keeping it completely stress-free. Nothing felt staged — just real, intimate moments captured exactly as they happened.”
— Vageesha Sharma
“Planning from abroad required trust and discretion, and James delivered both. The experience never felt like a photoshoot — it felt like a real moment unfolding naturally. We trusted him completely.”
— Vatsal Gupta
“From the moment James walked in, the nerves were gone. My husband hates having his photo taken, but James made it feel like a laugh rather than a shoot. Every guest commented on how brilliant he was. The photos are absolutely stunning.”
— Connie Murphy
“We received sneak peeks incredibly fast and the full gallery arrived far quicker than expected. The quality of the photos and the album is beyond anything we could have imagined.”
— Sarah Herlihy
“James blended in like one of the gang. We honestly forgot he was even there at times, yet he captured every emotion perfectly. The photos tell the story of the day exactly as it felt.”
— Pamela Milner
Legal Requirements for Getting Married in Ireland from Australia
To get married in Ireland, couples must submit a Notice of Intent to Marry at least three months before the wedding date.
These are the official Irish government resources you’ll need:

Once timelines are understood, the legal side is straightforward.

TRUST MATTERS MORE WHEN YOU’RE 17,000 KM AWAY
When you’re planning from Australia, trust becomes the foundation of every decision.
Look for suppliers who:
respond clearly and quickly
explain processes in plain language
are used to overseas planning
don’t rush decisions
If communication feels vague early on, distance will amplify it later

“Planning from abroad felt effortless. Communication was clear, relaxed, and we trusted everything was handled. The photos arrived incredibly quickly and were beyond anything we expected.”
WHY PHOTOGRAPHY IS EVEN MORE IMPORTANT FROM AUSTRALIA
When you live in Australia, many guests won’t make the journey back to Ireland.
Photography becomes:
how family experience the day
how memories are shared across continents
how the atmosphere is preserved
Fast sneak peeks matter when time zones separate you. Storytelling matters when distance does the same.
Why Couples Living in Australia Choose JOD Photography
128+ five-star reviews. Calm, clear communication across time zones. Sneak peeks within days. Fast, reliable delivery. Natural storytelling with zero awkward posing.

A PERSONAL NOTE ON DISTANCE AND COMING HOME
Living far from home changes your perspective. When you’re in Australia, Ireland can feel both close and impossibly far away at the same time.
That’s why weddings back home matter so much. They’re not just events — they’re reconnections. Family. Familiarity. A grounding moment.
I understand that pull home, and I understand how important it is that the day feels relaxed, organised, and genuinely enjoyable — not stressful.
HOW MANY TRIPS HOME DO YOU NEED?
Most couples:
plan everything remotely
take one planning trip if possible
return home for the wedding
You don’t need to fly back and forth repeatedly. Smart planning replaces constant travel.
