Adam & Kate’s Misty Japanese Gardens Wedding In Tramore, Waterford
Trip up to County Waterford to shoot this stunning intimate wedding held in the Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens in Tramore, and honestly I was looking forward to this one from the moment it landed into my diary.
I’ve photographed weddings here before, but every single time I come back to these gardens I see something new.
This place has absolutely everything you need for beautiful wedding images.
Tiny winding walkways.
Little bridges.
Streams weaving through the gardens.
Hidden ponds.
Woodland areas.
Exotic flowers.
Color exploding everywhere you look.
Late spring had the whole place fully alive.
You genuinely feel like you’ve stepped into this hidden jungle escape overlooking the Irish coastline. It’s hard to explain until you stand inside it yourself. The gardens almost swallow you up in beauty.
Photography isn’t just about showing what something looked like. It’s about showing what it felt like to stand there.
A Proper Irish Estate Wedding Morning
The morning started back at Kate’s family home and honestly the craic with the family was brilliant from the second I walked in the door.
I grew up in an Irish estate myself, so I already knew exactly what was about to happen.
When one of your own is getting married, the whole neighbourhood comes outside for a look see.
It’s basically an unwritten Irish tradition.
Everyone standing around waiting to see:
- the dress
- the flowers
- the cars
- and most importantly the bride herself.
Even though people were spread around the place, I remember gently saying:
“Lads move in a little closer there so ye can get a proper look at Kate.”
And they did.
Phones out.
Big smiles.
Everyone excited.
Because these are people who watched Kate growing up her whole life. No chance they were missing this moment.
And then there was Ger.
Kate’s father.
Honestly the proudest man in Ireland that morning.
We were sitting at the breakfast table beforehand having the craic and chatting away while he was trying to feed me breakfast every ten minutes.
“Sit down there James and have something to eat sure.”
Absolute gentleman and a gas man for the whole day.
But when he walked Kate out the front door later that morning, the pride pouring off him was unreal.
Chest out.
Smiling from ear to ear.
Looking at his daughter like she was the centre of the universe.
And honestly?
To him she probably was.
The Weather Apps Lied To Us
The night before the wedding I checked every weather app I had.
Dry.
Checked again that morning.
Still dry.
Well…
the apps lied to us.
By the time we arrived at the Japanese Gardens there was a misty rain slowly building over Tramore.
Maybe because we were right along the coastline, but the mist just kept slowly rolling in over the gardens while guests took their seats waiting for Kate to arrive.
The funny thing was though…
nobody really cared.
It was warm.
People grabbed umbrellas.
One guest disappeared up to the office and came back down loaded up with umbrellas for everybody else.
And the atmosphere stayed beautiful and relaxed.
Adam & Kate Were Lost In Their Own Little World
Adam looked cool, calm and collected when I arrived.
Either he genuinely wasn’t nervous…
or he deserves an Oscar for hiding it.
But once Kate arrived and made her way down through the gardens, you could see everything soften instantly.
The rain even eased off slightly for her walk through the gardens.
Guests were seated down near the canopy while others stood higher up along the hill looking down through the flowers and winding pathways as Ger led Kate toward Adam.
The scenery around them was honestly incredible.
And when Ger handed Kate over, Adam wrapped her into a huge hug and from that point onward the entire ceremony just became laughter and love.
The way they looked at each other all day…
they were completely lost in their own little world.
The Japanese Gardens Came Alive In The Rain
To cover every angle during the ceremony I had no choice but to step out into the misty rain myself.
But honestly?
The rain made the gardens even more beautiful.
It saturated every colour.
Every leaf.
Every flower.
Everything came alive.
Looking around at all the exotic plants and flowers I remember thinking:
“I couldn’t bring my mammy here.”
You know mammys and flowers.
They’d be clipping little snips off plants trying to bring them home for the garden.
“Sure we could take a little piece of that now couldn’t we?”
Something about Irish mammys and flowers…
they just have to have them.
Underneath the canopy surrounded by streams, bridges and unbelievable colours, Adam and Kate exchanged their vows while tears quietly rolled through different parts of the crowd.
One of my favourite moments of the whole ceremony actually happened because I kept scanning different emotional layers around the gardens.
Adam’s grandmother was higher up near the hill overlooking the ceremony.
Adam’s mother was down near the front with Kate’s family.
Further back guests were wiping tears away quietly too.
And I remember looking around thinking:
this is why I love documentary wedding photography.
Different emotions happening everywhere all at once.
The Loved Ones Table
Every Irish wedding has those moments where joy and heartbreak quietly stand beside each other.
Inside the reception there was a table remembering loved ones who had passed away including Kate’s sister, Adam’s grandfather and Kate’s grandfather.
At one point Adam and Kate both looked back toward the table together.
Just a quiet little glance.
No posing.
No direction.
No big dramatic moment.
Just love, memory and absence all existing together for a second.
One of those moments that says everything without anybody speaking.
A Little Burst Of Colour & Chaos
Once we finished up inside the gardens and before we escaped back off into the misty rain again, we gathered everybody outside for a little confetti moment.
I rounded everyone up outside and said:
“Right lads, squeeze in close here and absolutely fire it at them.”
And honestly?
These are always some of my favourite moments during a wedding day.
Nobody is really posing anymore.
People are laughing.
People are shouting.
Confetti is flying everywhere.
Half the guests throw it too early.
Someone always gets absolutely nailed in the face with it.
It’s chaos…
but the good kind of chaos.
Adam and Kate walked through the middle of it all completely buzzing while colour exploded around them and everyone cheered them on.
For a few seconds the rain, the umbrellas and everything else disappeared and it was just pure happiness.
“Ah Sure… Let’s Go Out In It”
Once the ceremony finished we made our way back toward the entrance for refreshments before trying to run through family photographs nearby.
But the rain wasn’t leaving.
Every time we thought it might stop…
back it came again.
And honestly?
Most couples would probably decide to stay dry and call it there.
Not Adam and Kate.
They basically said:
“Ah sure to hell with it.”
Grabbed umbrellas and off we went wandering deeper into the gardens.
And that’s where the magic happened.
We stopped hiding from the weather and started using it instead.
Walking through streams of colour.
Laughing in the rain.
Stopping at little bridges and pathways.
Throwing the umbrellas down for quick moments between showers.
At one stage I was literally walking through the streams inside the gardens trying to line up shots.
And honestly?
I loved every second of it.
As photographers we dream about couples willing to fully embrace Irish weather instead of fighting it.
Maybe two weddings out of ten actually go for it.
Adam and Kate absolutely did.
A Friendly Little Dog Wanted To Say Hello
After finishing in the gardens Kate brought me around Tramore to a few locations that meant a lot personally to her.
One stop was near a building where her grandfather had grown up years ago, now turned into a business and café.
While we were there this little dog spotted Adam and Kate standing in the rain and decided he wanted to join the wedding too.
The owner laughed and said:
“Go on over.”
The little fella crawled over through the rain looking for rubs while Adam and Kate bent down laughing petting him.
One of those random little moments that ends up becoming part of the story of the day forever.
The Cliffs, The Mist & The Magic Of Ireland
We eventually made our way down near the cliffs overlooking the ocean.
The entire coastline had disappeared into this soft white mist.
Rain falling.
Waves crashing somewhere below us.
Rugged rocks barely visible through the fog.
And honestly…
it felt magical.
Pure rugged Ireland.
These images would never have existed if Adam and Kate had allowed the weather to control the mood of the day.
Instead they embraced it completely.
The dress was wet.
Everyone knew it.
Nobody cared anymore.
And because they gave into the weather instead of fighting it, we created something far more emotional and real.
I say it all the time:
Ireland is stunning.
You just have to be willing to unlock its beauty no matter what weather turns up on the day.
This Is What I Love About Weddings Like This
The truth is, most of the best moments during a wedding are over before people even realise they happened.
A father in-law messing with his son-in-law seconds after the ceremony.
A nervous smile across the room.
Kids sprinting through puddles.
The way your friends react when you finally walk back down the aisle married.
That is the stuff I look for all day.
Yes, I will create the big portraits when the moment calls for it.
The dramatic cliff views, the quiet misty portraits, the images that belong on walls for the next thirty years.
But most of the day, I am watching.
Following the atmosphere.
The nerves.
The laughter.
The tiny moments people miss while they are living them.
My job is not just to take photographs.
It is to walk you back through your wedding day visually years from now and make it still feel alive. I want you to remember and feel it like i did.
And honestly, Adam & Kate’s wedding had that feeling from beginning to end.
