Elaine & Chris | A Carrigaline Court Hotel Wedding Full of Laughter, Rain and One Very Clever Plan
You know honestly, by the time I got around to photographing Elaine and Chris’s wedding, it felt like I’d known Elaine for years.
For months my WhatsApp would light up with another message from her. We’d chat about wedding plans, timelines, music, weather, photographs and everything in between. By the time the wedding day finally arrived, it felt less like turning up to photograph a client and more like meeting an old friend.
As a Cork wedding photographer, those are often the weddings that end up being the most memorable.
When I arrived at Carrigaline Court Hotel, the atmosphere was exactly what you’d hope for.
Prosecco was flowing.
Music was playing.
The bridesmaids were laughing.
The hair and makeup team were laughing.
Elaine was laughing.
I was laughing.
Everyone was in flying form.
Outside, however, the weather had other ideas.
A misty Cork rain had settled in for the morning and all I could think about was Ballea Castle. We had plans to head there later for photographs and I kept glancing out the windows hoping the clouds might eventually give us a break.
A short while later I headed up the road to where Chris and the lads were getting ready.
Just like the girls, the boys were completely relaxed.
No panic.
No stress.
Just a group of mates enjoying the morning and having the craic together before one of their own got married.

Tears Before The Ceremony
Back at the hotel, Elaine stepped into her dress from Curvy Chic Bridal.
And that’s when one of the first emotional moments of the day happened.
Chris’s dad came in to say good morning.
The second Elaine saw him, the tears started flowing.
You could instantly see the bond between them.
In pure Cork fashion he wasn’t having any of it.
“Aww girl, no need for them. You look amazing.”
He wrapped his arms around her and gave her a hug.
Simple.
Genuine.
And enough to get everyone else emotional too.
Those are the moments I love most.
The ones nobody plans.
The ones that happen naturally.

The Flower Dudes Stole The Show
Downstairs guests were beginning to take their seats.
Now, Elaine and Chris had warned me about the flower dudes.
Chris’s nephews had been promoted to one of the most important jobs of the day.
Elaine had bought them purple tutus.
And they absolutely delivered.
The lads came strutting down the aisle throwing confetti everywhere, completely owning the moment.
Guests were bent over laughing.
The boys loved every second of the attention.
And suddenly everyone was relaxed before the ceremony had even begun.

Meeting Halfway
One of the things Elaine had told me months earlier was that she wanted to walk down the aisle herself.
Chris would leave the top of the aisle and meet her halfway.
Together they would walk the final steps side by side, symbolising entering this new chapter of life as equals.
United.
It was one of the most beautiful aisle entrances I’ve ever witnessed.
No dramatic grand gesture.
No tradition for tradition’s sake.
Just two people choosing each other.
As Chris stepped forward and met Elaine halfway, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room.
You could feel what it meant to them.
And everybody else felt it too.

A Ceremony Filled With Emotion
Their celebrant and friend Sarah Donovan guided everyone through a beautiful ceremony filled with laughter and emotion.
Aoife Coady’s voice filled the room while family and friends watched two people who were clearly best friends marry each other.
Then came another emotional moment.
Victoria stepped forward to do a reading.
Standing in front of a room full of family and friends isn’t easy at the best of times, but she delivered it beautifully.
You could feel the emotion in the room as she spoke. Guests smiled, a few wiped away tears, and for a few minutes everyone was completely locked into the moment.
It was one of those moments that reminded everyone exactly why they were there.
To celebrate two people who were loved by so many.
Then came the vows.
The smiles.
The tears.
The nervous laughter.
The kind of little moments that nobody plans but everyone remembers.
And before long, Elaine and Chris were officially married.
A room full of family and friends erupted into applause as the newlyweds made their way back down the aisle together.
The celebrations were only getting started.

Ballea Castle And A Bit Of Cork Determination
After the ceremony, Elaine had arranged something special.
A friend had recently restored the stunning Ballea Castle and kindly allowed us to use the grounds for photographs.
Before we even got there, however, the fun started.
Elaine had hired an old-style bus for the bridal party.
Honestly, it felt like a school tour.
A bus full of adults laughing, singing and enjoying themselves as we headed off on our little adventure.
The rain still hadn’t disappeared.
Typical.
We used the castle interiors first and made the most of the incredible surroundings.
The stone walls, the character of the building and the history around us created the perfect backdrop while we waited to see if the weather would give us a break.
Eventually I looked outside and said:
“Right lads. It’s only drizzle. We’re Irish. We’ll survive.”
Nobody argued.
We stepped outside.
The misty rain became part of the atmosphere.
The castle stood proudly behind us.
And instead of fighting the weather, we embraced it.
Sometimes that’s where the best photographs come from.
Not perfect sunshine.
Not blue skies.
Just real Irish weather and two people who couldn’t stop laughing together.
The photographs ended up feeling exactly like the day itself.
Natural.
Relaxed.
And completely authentic.

What Elaine Had To Say
"James! So much more than a vendor and photographer. He was part of the wedding and the day! His electric energy had everyone in stitches. The ugly tears and snorting laughs definitely come out when he's around! If you want to really capture the essence of your day, James is the man. He has a natural eye for storytelling. He'll capture the joy and love. Each photograph evokes powerful emotional responses. You instantly know he loves what he does. He'll have taster photos ready for you the next morning to browse over with your coffee and hangover cures. The hardest part was choosing which images to use for the photo album.I cannot wait to get our favourite ones printed for the walls. To have this talent right on our doorstep in Cork is an absolute dream.Worth every penny. You have complete peace of mind and transparency every step of the way."

The FUN Photoshoot Of The Day
Back at Carrigaline Court Hotel later that evening, somebody had a slightly mad idea.
Actually, it was Elaine’s idea.
This girl is a little bit mad, and I mean that as a compliment.
A few minutes later there we were standing in the middle of a roundabout taking photographs.
Cars were slowing down.
People were beeping horns.
Drivers were cheering us on.
The newlyweds were laughing.
And somehow we managed to get the photographs without causing an international incident.
It was one of those moments that perfectly summed up the day.
Fun.
Spontaneous.
A little bit chaotic.
And completely unforgettable.
The best part was how natural it all felt.
Nothing forced.
Nothing planned.
Just Elaine being Elaine and Chris happily going along with another one of her ideas.

Michelle’s Poem
Later in the evening, Chris’s sister Michelle stood up during the speeches and read a poem.
By that stage everyone was already emotional.
The poem brought the room to a standstill.
It perfectly captured the love, friendship and family that surrounded Elaine and Chris throughout the day.
Looking around the room, there were plenty of people suddenly finding reasons to stare at the ceiling.
Others were reaching for tissues.
A few were pretending they definitely had something in their eye.
It was one of those moments that reminded everyone what weddings are really about.
Family.
Friendship.
Love.
And the people who have walked alongside you through life.

A First Dance Lit By Hundreds Of Tiny Lights
Elaine had another surprise planned.
As Kingfishr’s Shot In The Dark filled the room, guests crowded onto the dance floor.
The hotel lights were dimmed.
Phones appeared.
Hundreds of tiny lights began glowing around the couple.
The effect was magical.
For a few minutes it felt like the rest of the room disappeared.
Just Elaine.
Just Chris.
And everybody they loved surrounding them.
It was beautiful.
One of those moments where nobody was checking their watch.
Nobody was thinking about tomorrow.
Everyone was simply present.
Watching two people completely lost in the moment.
As a wedding photographer, those are the moments you live for.
The ones that feel bigger than photographs.

Then The Party Really Started
Of course, emotional moments only last so long before an Irish wedding does what Irish weddings do best.
The Wilful took things up another gear.
The dance floor filled.
The music got louder.
The drinks flowed.
And the celebrations carried on long into the night.
Guests who had spent the day laughing together were now dancing together.
The kind of dance floor where nobody cares how they look.
The best kind.
Exactly the way it should be.

The Kind Of Wedding You’ll Remember
Looking back through the photographs afterwards, what stood out wasn’t the rain.
It wasn’t the castle.
It wasn’t even the roundabout adventure.
It was the people.
Every photograph felt like Elaine and Chris.
Relaxed.
Funny.
Emotional.
Completely themselves.
Some weddings are remembered because of the venue.
Some because of the weather.
Some because of the details.
I’ll remember Elaine and Chris because they stayed completely true to themselves from beginning to end.
The flower dudes.
Meeting halfway down the aisle.
Victoria’s reading.
Michelle’s poem.
The tears.
The laughter.
The castle adventure.
The roundabout madness.
The first dance surrounded by phone lights.
It was a day full of personality from start to finish.
Nothing felt forced.
Nothing felt staged.
Everything felt real.
And that’s exactly what weddings should be.
As a Cork wedding photographer, these are the days I love photographing most.
Not because everything goes perfectly.
But because real life happens.
The laughter.
The emotion.
The unexpected moments.
The moments that nobody plans but everybody remembers.
Those are the moments that matter.
Those are the moments worth preserving.
And those are the moments Elaine and Chris gave me all day long.

Thoughts
Some couples spend months planning every detail of a wedding.
Others focus on simply bringing together the people they love most.
Elaine and Chris somehow managed to do both.
The day felt beautiful without ever feeling formal.
Emotional without ever feeling heavy.
Relaxed without ever feeling disorganised.
And fun from the very first minute until the very last song.
Even the rain couldn’t put a dent in the atmosphere.
If anything, it became part of the story.
The sort of story that everyone will still be talking about years from now.
The flower dudes in purple tutus.
The emotional ceremony.
The castle photographs in the drizzle.
The madness of the roundabout.
The glowing phones during the first dance.
The packed dance floor.
The laughter.
The tears.
The people.
Everything that makes a wedding unforgettable.
Elaine and Chris, thank you for trusting me to capture your day.
Thank you for making me feel like part of the gang from the moment I arrived.
Thank you for embracing the weather, embracing the chaos and embracing every moment exactly as it came.
It was an absolute pleasure to be there.
A huge thank you to the fantastic team at Carrigaline Court Hotel for looking after everyone throughout the day.
Thank you to Sarah Donovan Celebrant, Aoife Coady, The Wilful, Curvy Chic Bridal, Karolina MUA, Only Ever By CK, The Workshop Cork, Stacks of Flowers and everyone who helped bring the day together.
And finally, thank you to all the family and friends who filled the day with so much energy, emotion, laughter and love.
Some weddings are beautiful.
Some weddings are fun.
This one somehow managed to be both.
