More Than a Wedding

The more I think back on this wedding, the more I realise friendship was at the heart of the whole day.

You could see it from early that morning.

At Jane’s house, her bridesmaids weren’t simply there because they’d been asked to wear a dress and stand beside her. These were proper friendships. The kind built over years.

Neighbours were dropping in with cards and hugs. People would appear at the door just to see Jane before she left.

There was this lovely feeling around the place of one of our own is getting married today.

And everyone wanted to be part of it.

Her bridesmaids were never far away. Helping when something needed doing, laughing when it didn’t, and making sure their friend had the morning she deserved.

Then I went over to Niall’s.

Different house.

Same story.

Except with considerably more taking the piss out of each other.

Breakfast was being eaten, suits were going on and nobody seemed entirely sure who owned what.

“Where’s my jacket?”

“They’re my shoes, not your shoes.”

The lads were in tears laughing while somehow managing to get themselves dressed in the middle of it all.

It was brilliant to watch because there was nothing put on for the camera. This was clearly how these guys were together every other day of the year.

And later, during the speeches, you saw the other side of it.

Listening to Niall’s best man speak about him, you could tell immediately that this wasn’t a friendship that started because somebody needed a best man for a wedding.

These lads had history.

They knew each other properly.

The stories. The good times. Probably a fair few things that were wisely left out of the speech.

But underneath all the jokes was something much stronger.

They were there for one another.

And that was true on both sides.

By the time the bridal party surrounded Jane and Niall on the dance floor later that night and everyone disappeared into that huge group hug, the photograph meant more to me.

It wasn’t just a nice ending to a first dance.

It was the whole day coming full circle.

The girls who had stood beside Jane that morning.

The lads who could barely get dressed because they were laughing so much.

The friends who had grown up together.

The people who knew Jane and Niall long before there was a wedding to celebrate.

All wrapped around two of their favourite people.

And maybe that’s why this one felt like much more than a wedding.

It was friendship in all its forms. The slagging. The laughter. The hugs. The history. And that quiet understanding that when something really matters, these are the people who will be standing beside you.
