If you’re dreaming of escaping to a place where the landscape will take your breath away, the people will welcome you like family, and the weather will keep you on your toes—then eloping in Kerry, Ireland, might be just what you’re looking for. I’ve been capturing weddings all around Kerry for years now, and I’ve got to say, there’s something magical about this corner of the world that makes it perfect for couples looking to say “I do” in an intimate, unforgettable way. You don’t come to Kerry to get married without using the landscape as your backdrop.

So, grab yourself a cuppa, and let’s chat about how you can make your elopement dreams come true in the Kingdom of Kerry.

Why Kerry for Your Elopement?

Before we dive into the logistics, let’s talk about why Kerry should be at the top of your list when planning an elopement. I mean, where else can you get married with a backdrop that looks like it has not been touched in centuries? The landscapes here are jaw-droppingly beautiful and diverse—from dramatic coastlines to rugged mountains, and let’s not forget the famous rolling green hills, with a 100 different shades of green.

The Landscape

Kerry is a land of contrasts, and that’s part of what makes it so special for an elopement. Whether you’re dreaming of exchanging vows on a windswept cliff overlooking the Atlantic or in a hidden woodland spot surrounded by ancient trees, Kerry has it all, the national park in Killarney is over 26,000 acres, and deer will walk straight past you as tho you are not there.

Take The Wild Atlantic Way, for example. This 2,500-kilometer route hugs the west coast of Ireland, offering some of the most stunning seascapes you’ll ever lay eyes on. In Kerry, you can stop off at countless hidden beaches, dramatic cliffs, and cozy villages—perfect for those private moments you’ll remember forever. But remember, weather plays a huge part in every adventure. I know you have heard it a million times before, that Irish weather is unpredictable, listen to that and take from it, the weather will always be a huge factor. It could be raining right where you stand, and 200 meters away it could be sunny and dry, strange country this little island is.

The Dingle Peninsula

One of my favorite places for an elopement is the Dingle Peninsula. There’s something otherworldly about this place. The mountains meet the sea here in a way that feels both rugged and romantic. Imagine saying your vows with the sound of crashing waves in the background and those iconic cliffs standing tall behind you. Plus, the town of Dingle itself is as charming as they come, with brightly colored shops and pubs that make it feel like you’ve stepped into a movie set. And yes, they have fantastic seafood for the post-ceremony meal!, Dingle is like the movies you have seen about Ireland.

Kenmare

Then there’s Kenmare, a small town that packs a punch when it comes to beauty. The town is nestled between mountains and the sea, offering a peaceful yet awe-inspiring setting for an elopement. Wander through the cobbled streets or venture out to the surrounding countryside, and you’ll find picture-perfect spots for exchanging your vows. The vibe here is laid-back, and the scenery? Well, it’s second to none. You can be down on the beach, or at the foothill of a mountain in minuets. Stunning views all around.

Planning Your Kerry Elopement: What to Know

Now, I’m sure you’re wondering how to go about planning an elopement in a place like Kerry. Well, let’s break it down, shall we?

Weather: Expect the Unexpected

First things first—let’s talk about the weather. Ah, Irish weather. It’s as much a part of the landscape as the mountains and the sea. If you’re planning to elope in Kerry, be ready for anything. One minute you could have the sun shining down on you like a spotlight, and the next, you’re ducking for cover as a shower rolls in, I kid you not.

The best tip I can give you is to embrace the weather. Bring along a good rain jacket, wear layers, and don’t be afraid to get a little wet. Some of the most dramatic photos I’ve ever taken have been under those moody Irish skies. And remember, if it rains on your wedding day, it’s considered good luck here in Ireland!, so they say lol.

What to Bring

Eloping in Kerry means you’ll be spending a lot of time outdoors, so pack smart. Comfortable shoes are a must—whether you’re hiking up a hill for that perfect cliffside shot or wandering through a forest to find a quiet spot for your ceremony.

Here’s a quick list of essentials:

  • Layers: The weather can change quickly, so bring clothing you can easily add or remove.

  • A rain jacket or umbrella: You’ll thank me when that inevitable shower hits!

  • Comfortable shoes: For those all-important adventure shots.

  • A backup plan: Have an indoor location or sheltered spot in mind, just in case the weather really doesn’t cooperate.

  • An adventurous spirit: Kerry’s wild beauty comes with its challenges, but trust me—it’s worth it.

The Culture and People

Now, let’s talk about the people. One of the best things about eloping in Kerry is the warmth of the Irish welcome. There’s a reason people say, “Céad míle fáilte”—a hundred thousand welcomes—when you arrive. Whether you’re staying in a cozy B&B or a luxury hotel, you’ll be treated like royalty. The locals love a good celebration, and they’ll be more than happy to help make your day extra special. We know how to do it, and do it right in Ireland.

One of the highlights for many couples is popping into a local pub for a celebratory pint after the ceremony. You might even be treated to a bit of traditional Irish music, with locals joining in for a sing-song. It’s the perfect way to end an unforgettable day. Join and become part of the Craíc, we love a good session in Ireland.

Top Spots to Elope in Kerry

Let’s get down to the details—where exactly should you elope in Kerry? Here are a few of my top picks:

1. Slea Head, Dingle Peninsula

The views from Slea Head are truly breathtaking. Imagine standing on a cliff with the Atlantic Ocean stretching out before you, while behind you, the mountains rise up in a dramatic display of nature’s beauty. It’s an iconic spot and one that’ll make for some truly spectacular photos.

2. The Gap of Dunloe

If you’re looking for a more secluded spot, the Gap of Dunloe is a narrow mountain pass just outside Killarney. It’s a peaceful and quiet place, perfect for couples who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the world. The views here are incredible, with jagged peaks and sparkling lakes providing the perfect backdrop.

3. Derrynane Beach

For those dreaming of a beach elopement, Derrynane Beach is a hidden gem. Located near Caherdaniel, this beach offers white sands and turquoise waters, framed by rolling hills. It’s a magical spot, and on a quiet day, you’ll feel like you have the entire beach to yourselves.

4. Ross Castle, Killarney National Park

For a touch of history, why not elope at Ross Castle in Killarney National Park? This 15th-century tower house sits on the edge of Lough Leane, surrounded by mountains and ancient woodlands. It’s a picture-perfect spot that combines nature and history in one breathtaking location.

A Word on the Irish Weather (Again)

You might be thinking, “James, you’ve already mentioned the weather,” and you’d be right! But it’s worth repeating—be ready for all seasons in a single day. My advice? Roll with it. A bit of rain never hurt anyone, and those misty moments can actually create some of the most magical photos. Plus, there’s something undeniably romantic about huddling under an umbrella together as the rain softly falls around you.

The Irish Welcome

I can’t talk about Kerry without mentioning the people. The Irish are known for their friendliness and hospitality, and nowhere is that truer than in Kerry. The locals here have a warmth and generosity of spirit that’ll make you feel right at home from the moment you arrive. Whether it’s the chatty B&B owner who serves you a homemade breakfast or the pub owner who pulls you the perfect pint of Guinness, the people of Kerry go out of their way to make sure your stay is memorable.

Tips for Eloping in Kerry

  1. Hire a local photographer (wink, wink): Someone who knows the area can guide you to the best spots for photos, as well as help you navigate the ever-changing weather.

  2. Be flexible: The Irish weather can be unpredictable, so have a backup plan for your ceremony location.

  3. Go off the beaten path: While the popular spots like Dingle and Killarney are stunning, don’t be afraid to explore lesser-known areas for a more intimate experience.

  4. Bring a sense of adventure: Eloping in Kerry is about embracing the wild beauty of the landscape, so come prepared for an adventure!
