Killarney is one of those places where the landscape does half the work for you. The mountains, lakes, woodland and constantly changing weather mean you can move a few minutes down the road and find a completely different photograph.
I’m James from JOD Photography, a Killarney wedding photographer covering weddings and elopements throughout Killarney National Park and County Kerry. I’ve photographed couples around the National Park, Muckross, the Gap of Dunloe and the lakes, and one thing I’ve learned is that you don’t need to spend half your wedding day travelling around Killarney to come home with incredible photographs.
Whether you’re getting married at one of Killarney’s hotels, planning a small wedding or coming to Ireland for an elopement, my approach is fairly simple. We’ll make the most of the landscape when it makes sense, I’ll give you direction when you need it, and then I’ll get you back to your wedding.
The photographs should fit around the day. The day shouldn’t have to fit around the photographs.
Killarney gives us something that’s difficult to find anywhere else: a huge amount of variety without needing to spend your wedding day driving from one end of Kerry to the other.
Around Killarney National Park you’ve got lakes, mountains, woodland, old stone buildings and wide open landscapes. Ross Castle, Muckross Abbey, the Lakes of Killarney and the Gap of Dunloe can all give completely different photographs, and that’s before the weather starts changing everything again.
That’s one of the things I love about photographing weddings here. I’m not arriving with a list of ten poses that I’m going to repeat with every couple. I look at the light, the weather, where we are and what’s happening in front of me, and decide what kind of photograph it deserves.
If the mountains disappear into mist, I’ll use it. If we’ve got hard sunshine, we’ll work with that. If Kerry decides it’s going to rain sideways for twenty minutes, we don’t need to panic. Some of my favourite photographs have happened when the weather didn’t behave itself.
And we don’t need to visit every famous location in Killarney just because they’re there.
For most wedding days, I’d much rather choose one or two locations that work with your venue, your timeline and the weather, get what we need, and have you back with your family and friends.
You’re getting married in Killarney. You’re not spending the day on a sightseeing tour with your photographer.

I’ve photographed couples around Killarney National Park, the Gap of Dunloe and other parts of Killarney and County Kerry, in sunshine, cloud, rain and the kind of weather that seems to change every ten minutes.
That’s important because the photographs you see on this page aren’t here to show you what I’ve found on a location guide. They’re places I’ve actually photographed.
Some couples want ten minutes away from their guests for a handful of photographs. Others want to head into the National Park and make the landscape a bigger part of their day. And for an elopement, we can have much more freedom to explore.
There isn’t one Killarney wedding route that everybody needs to follow.
We’ll use the parts of Killarney that make sense for your day.
I don’t photograph an entire wedding in one style.
For most of the day I’m simply watching what’s happening. The nerves in the morning, people taking the piss out of each other, parents watching their son or daughter, kids doing whatever kids decide they’re going to do, and all the little things that nobody could have planned.
That’s the documentary side of how I work.
When we head outside for your photographs, I’ll take the wheel for a little while. I’ll find the light, choose where I want you and give you enough direction to get things moving. But I’m usually watching for what happens just after that. The laugh, the look, the comment one of you makes to the other.
And somewhere like Killarney National Park gives me another side of photography that I’ve loved for years: landscape.
I spent around 25 years photographing landscapes before weddings became my world, so when the mountains, lakes, weather and light come together, I want to make a photograph that does justice to both you and where you are.
Sometimes that means documentary photography. Sometimes a proper family portrait. Sometimes something creative or more editorial. And sometimes I’ll put you tiny in the frame and let Killarney do the talking.

I aim to share a small selection of sneak peeks as soon as I can after your wedding. If I’m not photographing another wedding the following day, that can often mean the very next day. Your complete gallery is delivered within 4–6 weeks, although, as many of my reviews mention, it’s often considerably sooner.
Your photographs are yours to keep
Your private online gallery makes it easy to view, share and download your photographs in high resolution. Intimate and Moments galleries remain online for 3 months, while Memories, Forever and Eternity galleries remain online for 6 months. You can download as often as you like while your gallery is live. Once it arrives, I always recommend downloading the complete collection and keeping at least one extra backup somewhere safe, as the online gallery isn’t intended as permanent cloud storage.

Start with the collection that suits your day, then add only the things that genuinely matter to you. There’s no need to squeeze your wedding into a package just because that’s how the price list was written.
Talk to Me About Your PlansYou don’t need 150 guests and a hotel ballroom to get married in Killarney. Some of the most enjoyable days I’ve photographed here have been the smallest ones.
A Killarney elopement can be just the two of you, or a handful of the people closest to you. We can photograph part of the day around Killarney National Park, stop somewhere for a pint or something to eat, head into the mountains or find somewhere quiet beside the lakes. It doesn’t have to follow the usual wedding-day timetable.
For couples travelling to Ireland, this is where Killarney really comes into its own. You have mountains, lakes, woodland and historic locations packed into a relatively small area, so we can create a lot of variety without spending the entire day in the car.
I also don’t arrive with a fixed route that every couple has to follow. Where we go depends on the weather, the light, how busy the National Park is and what kind of day you actually want.
Sometimes the photograph I had in my head isn’t the photograph Kerry gives us. That’s fine. We’ll make something from what’s actually in front of us.
And if you’re the kind of couple who’d rather have a relaxed day exploring Killarney than spend hours being posed for photographs, we’ll get on very well.

One of the first things couples ask me is where we should go for photographs in Killarney National Park.
There isn’t one answer.
Muckross Abbey gives us old stone, arches and a completely different atmosphere from the open landscape around the lakes. Ross Castle gives us the lake, mountains and castle in one area. The Gap of Dunloe is where I’d look when we want to make the landscape a much bigger part of the photograph.
Then there are quieter stretches of woodland, lake edges and little places that don’t necessarily have a famous name attached to them.
The best location isn’t always the most famous one.
It depends on where you’re getting married, how much time we have, the weather, the light and how busy Killarney is that day. I’d rather take you somewhere that works beautifully for twenty minutes than spend an hour driving to a location simply because Instagram says we have to go there.
You don’t need to build your wedding day around photography, but a little planning can make a big difference in Killarney.
Keep the travelling sensible. Killarney has plenty of incredible locations, but trying to visit four or five of them on a wedding day usually means spending more time in the car and less time with your guests. One great location at the right time can give us far more than racing around trying to tick boxes.
Expect the weather to change. This is Kerry. Sunshine, cloud, mist and rain can all turn up on the same day. I don’t see that as a problem. Different weather gives us different photographs, and I’ll adjust where we go and how I photograph it rather than forcing a plan that no longer makes sense.
Think about the crowds. Some parts of Killarney National Park can get extremely busy, particularly during the tourist season. The time of day can matter just as much as the location itself.
Leave a little breathing room. I don’t need hours with you. Give me enough time to work without watching the clock every thirty seconds and we’ll get what we need without your wedding turning into a photoshoot.
Trust the conditions. Sometimes we’ll arrive somewhere and the photograph we expected simply isn’t there. The light has changed, the mountains have disappeared or Kerry has thrown something completely different at us. That’s when experience matters. We’ll work with what we’ve got.
A lot of couples don’t live around the corner from Killarney. Some don’t even live in Ireland.
