Emotional first look between Aidan and Fiona in Clare

Some Love Stories Never Need To Be Rushed

When Fiona filled out the wedding questionnaire and told me the ceremony would take place at Vandeleur Walled Garden and the celebrations afterwards at Diamond Rocks Café, I did what I always do.

I started Googling.

Straight away I was blown away by Vandeleur Walled Garden.

I follow photographers from all over Ireland and the UK, and when they post photographs from dream locations, it always seems to be places like this. Elegant pathways, colourful gardens, hidden corners, beautiful glasshouses. It looked like something lifted straight from a magazine.

I was already excited.

Then I looked up Diamond Rocks Café.

Surely one incredible location couldn’t be followed by another.

But there it was.

Perched on one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in Ireland.

At that point I only had one wish.

Let it stay dry.

Everything else was a bonus.

A Relaxed Morning Full Of Laughter

I always arrive early.

Partly because I never trust long journeys and partly because I like having a few minutes to settle in before the day begins.

When I arrived, it was Aidan who greeted me at the door.

Big smile.

“I’m the groom,” he laughed.

Inside, Fiona and the girls were busy getting ready while hair and makeup were underway.

Fiona looked stunning in her gown from Lilac Rose Bridal, while the talented Shauna Quinn MUA worked her magic helping everyone look their best for the day ahead.

I wandered into the kitchen where I met Aidan’s mam and his best man Mark.

That’s always my way.

Have a chat. Break the ice. Let everyone know I’m sound and not some stranger following them around with cameras all day.

The atmosphere was brilliant.

Flowers being arranged.

People laughing.

Stories being told.

No stress.

No panic.

Just excitement.

Beautiful wedding day at Vandeleur Walled Garden

Before long Aidan and Mark were upstairs getting into their suits from Pursuit Menswear Ennis while final preparations continued downstairs.

Then it was Fiona’s turn.

The dress.

The finishing touches.

The moment everything starts to feel real.

The First Look

Before the ceremony, Fiona had planned a surprise for Aidan.

A first look.

By now these two had been together for twenty-five years.

Twenty-five years.

You’d think there wouldn’t be too many surprises left after that long.

You’d be wrong.

We found the spot Fiona had picked out inside the gardens.

A small bench tucked away among the beautiful surroundings.

Aidan sat down.

“So what do I do now?” he asked.

“Nothing,” I laughed.

“You sit there and wait.”

While we waited, I told him about another wedding I’d photographed.

A truck driver.

Big beard.

Big man.

Solid as a rock all day.

Nothing seemed to faze him.

Then speeches arrived.

He started talking about his wife.

Suddenly his voice caught.

The words wouldn’t come.

A lump in his throat appeared from nowhere.

One of those beautiful moments nobody could have planned.

The kind of wedding moments I love most.

As I finished telling the story, Fiona appeared.

And within a split second everything changed.

The smile on Aidan’s face got bigger.

And bigger.

And bigger.

Twenty-five years later she could still stop him in his tracks.

Twenty-five years later she could still surprise him.

The album I keep coming back to

A wedding album should feel as good as the photographs inside it.

Forever and Eternity include a handcrafted 30 × 30cm / 12 × 12" wedding album, designed around up to 80 photographs from your day. You’ll have a choice of finishes, but if you ask me which one I’d choose, I’ll nearly always point you towards the Acrylic Prestige.

The crystal-clear acrylic cover gives the photograph real depth and the lay-flat design lets the story flow beautifully across the page. It feels substantial without being fussy, and it’s exactly the kind of album I want my couples to still be taking down from the shelf years from now.

No long wait afterwards

See a little of it while it still feels fresh.

I aim to share a small selection of sneak peeks as soon as I can after your wedding. If I’m not photographing another wedding the following day, that can often mean the very next day. Your complete gallery is delivered within 4–6 weeks, although, as many of my reviews mention, it’s often considerably sooner.

Your photographs are yours to keep

Your private online gallery makes it easy to view, share and download your photographs in high resolution. Intimate and Moments galleries remain online for 3 months, while Memories, Forever and Eternity galleries remain online for 6 months. You can download as often as you like while your gallery is live. Once it arrives, I always recommend downloading the complete collection and keeping at least one extra backup somewhere safe, as the online gallery isn’t intended as permanent cloud storage.

Emotional wedding ceremony moment at Vandeleur Gardens

A Beautiful Ceremony Inside The Greenhouse

The ceremony took place inside the stunning greenhouse at Vandeleur Walled Garden, led beautifully by humanist celebrant Margaret Geraghty.

Guests had already found their seats. One of Aidan’s friends sat quietly in the corner playing guitar and singing as everyone settled in.

The atmosphere was intimate.

Relaxed.

Emotional.

The kind of ceremony where you could feel how much every person there mattered.

As Fiona made her way towards the ceremony, Aidan was doing his best to play it cool.

But the smile gave him away.

Every single time he looked at her.

Then came the vows.

This was where the next surprise unfolded.

Aidan met Fiona when she was sixteen.

He was seventeen.

They’ve spent twenty-five years side by side.

A quarter of a century together.

Some people spend their lives searching for the person who completes them.

These two found each other before they were even adults.

Standing there inside that beautiful greenhouse, with the sun pouring through the glass and family gathered all around them, Aidan stepped forward to read his vows.

And suddenly the words became harder to get out.

Not because he didn’t know what to say.

Because he cared so much.

You could hear it in his voice.

You could see it on his face.

Twenty-five years later she still gave him butterflies.

The front row was in bits.

People behind me were in bits.

Partners were squeezing each other’s hands.

Women were looking at their husbands as if to say, “Would ya look at this.”

And Fiona stood there smiling at the man she’d spent the last twenty-five years with.

It was one of those moments you’ll never forget.

The kind of moment that reminds you what weddings are really about.

    Portraits Through The Gardens

After the ceremony we spent some time wandering through the gardens capturing photographs before heading to the reception.

Honestly, Vandeleur Walled Garden is every bit as beautiful in person as it looks online.

    Colour everywhere.

    Elegant pathways.

    Beautiful light.

    Stunning backdrops around every corner.

It’s the sort of place photographers dream about working in.

But if I’m honest, the location wasn’t the thing making these photographs special.

    It was Aidan and Fiona.

Twenty-five years together and they still looked completely comfortable in each other’s company.

    No awkwardness.

    No pretending.

Just two people enjoying being together.

    The way they always have.

Diamond Rocks Café And One Of Ireland’s Most Beautiful Coastlines

As I drove towards Diamond Rocks Café I couldn’t stop smiling.

    The sun was out.

    The ocean sparkled.

Waves crashed against the rocks below.

Locals were swimming in the natural pools carved into the coastline.

    It felt like paradise.

I actually found myself sending videos home saying:

    “You need to come here.”

“You need to see this place.”

I have travelled all over Ireland photographing weddings.

    I’ve seen some incredible locations.

But on a day like this, with the sun shining and the Atlantic stretching endlessly into the distance, it genuinely felt like one of the most beautiful places in the country.

When Aidan and Fiona arrived, I grabbed them for a short walk along the cliffs.

    The Atlantic Ocean below us.

The rugged Clare coastline all around us.

    The wind pushing against us.

And these two completely lost in their own little world.

    We spent fifteen minutes exploring.

Creating photographs that felt cinematic, dramatic and unmistakably Irish.

Standing there looking out across the ocean, it felt less like a wedding photoshoot and more like an adventure.

    The landscape became our canvas.

    The coastline became our backdrop.

And Aidan and Fiona simply enjoyed the moment.

Twenty-Five Years Later, Still Day One

Back at Diamond Rocks Café it was time for speeches.

    Mark got things underway.

Aidan’s dad brought plenty of laughs.

Then Aidan stood up once again.

And once again he surprised everyone.

This time he read a poem by Dr John Cooper called I’ve Fallen In Love With My Wife.

    As he read lines like:

“Every time I talk I mumble.”

“Every time I walk I stumble.”

“I’m dancing like a drunken uncle.”

    The room laughed.

Then he followed it with lines that were funny, heartfelt and full of affection.

And as he read them, looking across at Fiona the entire time, it became crystal clear what this wedding was really about.

    Not the gardens.

    Not the venue.

    Not the flowers.

    Not the details.

    Love.

Twenty-five years later Aidan still looked at Fiona the same way he probably did when they were teenagers.

    Still completely head over heels.

    Still completely smitten.

    Still completely in love.

    The years may have passed.

    Life may have happened.

But when he looked at Fiona, it was obvious.

For him it still felt like day one.

    Dancing Into The Next Chapter

As evening settled across the Clare coastline, DJ Mikey Solo took over the celebrations after Sticky Fingers had the dance floor packed for Aidan and Fiona’s first dance.

    The dance floor filled.

    The laughter got louder.

    The drinks flowed.

Family and friends celebrated long into the evening.

    The dance floor filled.

    The laughter got louder.

    The drinks flowed.

Family and friends celebrated long into the evening.

And while the wedding day itself had finally arrived, the truth is this story started twenty-five years ago.

    Long before the beautiful gardens.

    Long before the cliffs.

    Long before the vows.

It started when a sixteen-year-old girl met a seventeen-year-old boy.

    The years passed.

    Life happened.

    Jobs changed.

    Homes changed.

    The world changed.

But somehow one thing never did.

Aidan still looks at Fiona like she’s the most important person in the room.

And Fiona still lights up whenever he’s nearby.

After photographing their wedding, I don’t think the number that matters is twenty-five.

The number that matters is one.

Because twenty-five years later, they’re still choosing each other.

    Every morning.

    Every evening.

    Every ordinary Tuesday.

    Every special occasion.

    Every single day.

And in a world where everything seems to move so fast, there’s something incredibly beautiful about that.

Aidan and Fiona, thank you for trusting me to capture your day.

Thank you to the wonderful team at Vandeleur Walled Garden and Diamond Rocks Café for creating such incredible settings.

Thank you to Shauna Quinn MUA, Lilac Rose Bridal, Pursuit Menswear Ennis, Margaret Geraghty Humanist Celebrant and DJ Mikey Solo for helping make the day so special.

And thank you to all the family and friends who laughed, cried, hugged, cheered and celebrated alongside them.

    Twenty-five years together.

And somehow still completely in love.

    That’s a story worth celebrating.
