A Message From Colorado

A few weeks before this proposal, Clay got in touch with me from Denver, Colorado.

He had a plan.

He and Morgan were travelling to Ireland with Clay’s parents and wanted to make their trip to Cork even more memorable.

After chatting back and forth over WhatsApp, we settled on Charles Fort in Kinsale as the perfect location. The views, the history, and the dramatic bridge leading into the fort made it ideal for a surprise proposal.

The plan was simple. At around 4pm Clay would lead Morgan onto the bridge, and somewhere along the way he would get down on one knee.

Simple plans are often the best ones.

Blending In At Charles Fort

As always, I arrived early.

I like having time to walk around, check the light, and make sure I know exactly where everything is going to happen.

The biggest challenge with proposal photography is not being spotted.

Thankfully, a lovely couple out walking their dog stopped for a chat. Before long they became the perfect cover. Instead of looking like a photographer waiting for a proposal, I looked like another tourist enjoying the afternoon at Charles Fort.

Meanwhile, Clay, Morgan and Clay’s parents made their way towards the fort.

The Stage Was Set

As they stepped onto the bridge everything started falling into place.

Halfway across, Clay’s parents suddenly peeled away and made a beeline towards the fort itself.

That was the signal.

The stage was set.

Clay stopped walking.

Turned towards Morgan.

And dropped to one knee.

Morgan’s Amazing Reaction

Morgan had absolutely no idea what was about to happen.

For a moment she simply froze.

Then she looked at Clay.

Then she looked at the ring.

Then back at Clay again.

Her mouth dropped open as she tried to process what was happening right in front of her.

It was one of those reactions you simply cannot stage or recreate.

Pure surprise.

Pure emotion.

Pure happiness.

As Clay asked the question, the world seemed to disappear around them.

And thankfully…

She said yes.

The Hug That Said Everything

The moments immediately after a proposal are often my favourite.

The nerves disappear.

The question has been asked.

The answer has been given.

What follows is pure emotion.

The embrace between Clay and Morgan said everything that needed to be said.

Relief.

Excitement.

Disbelief.

Joy.

It was one of those moments where you can almost see the future unfolding in front of a couple.

Exploring Charles Fort As An Engaged Couple

After giving them a few moments to themselves, we spent some time exploring Charles Fort together.

The smiles were effortless.

The laughter came naturally.

And there was that unmistakable feeling that only exists in the first few minutes after a proposal.

Everything has changed.

Yet somehow everything feels exactly the same.

We wandered around the historic walls, photographed them along the bridge, and made the most of the stunning views across Cork Harbour.

Eventually Clay’s parents joined us again so we could capture a few family photographs and celebrate properly.

Why I Love Photographing Surprise Proposals

Proposal photography is different from anything else I photograph.

There are no second chances.

No practice runs.

No rehearsals.

Just a real moment happening in real time.

That is what makes it so special.

And that is exactly what happened at Charles Fort.
