If you’re looking for a Fernhill House Wedding Photographer, this wedding is a perfect example of why I enjoy returning to Fernhill House Hotel & Gardens time and time again. Every wedding here has its own personality, and on the 5th of July 2026 it was Lesley Ann and Julie-Marie who filled the gardens with laughter, emotion and a whole lot of fun. From a beautiful outdoor ceremony to breathtaking photographs at the Old Head, this was one of those days that reminded me why I love documentary wedding photography.
A Summer’s Day That Couldn’t Have Been Better
Every photographer hopes for a day like this.
The sun was shining from the moment I arrived. It was warm enough that plenty of guests had mini battery-powered fans in their hands, trying to keep cool while enjoying the day. Nobody complained though. If anything, it added to the relaxed atmosphere. Everyone was simply delighted to be outside.
Fernhill House looked incredible.
I’ve photographed weddings here a number of times now, but the gardens always seem to have something new to offer. Every path is lined with colour, every corner has its own character and every few steps reveal another beautiful backdrop. You can wander through the grounds for twenty minutes and never feel like you’re photographing in the same place twice.
It’s one of those venues where guests naturally spread out after the ceremony. Some sit chatting in the sunshine, others stroll through the gardens, children run around the lawns, and everyone seems to slow down and simply enjoy the day.
I honestly think that’s one of Fernhill’s biggest strengths.
Nature has a funny way of calming people, and when you combine beautifully maintained gardens with a relaxed atmosphere, people naturally become themselves. As a documentary photographer, that’s exactly what I want.
A Morning in the Styling Lounge
Just like many weddings I’ve photographed at Fernhill House, the morning began in the dedicated Styling Lounge.
It really deserves a mention because it makes such a difference to the start of the day.
Instead of everyone trying to squeeze into one hotel bedroom, the Styling Lounge gives everyone space. Hair and makeup artists can work comfortably, family members aren’t climbing over bags and suitcases, and there’s room to sit together, enjoy breakfast and take everything in before the ceremony begins.
It’s calm.
It’s organised.
And it allows the morning to unfold naturally.
Lesley Ann and Julie-Marie were surrounded by the people closest to them, with bridesmaids laughing together as everyone prepared for what would become a fantastic day.
We all spend our lives searching for something. For some, it’s adventure. For others, it’s purpose. But for the lucky ones, it’s finding the person who simply understands them without needing a single word.
“We Might Need Some Help…”
Before the wedding, Lesley Ann and Julie-Marie mentioned something that made me smile.
They said they might need a bit of guidance during the photographs.
Maybe some direction.
Maybe a few ideas on how to stand.
Where to look.
What to do.
The funny thing was…
They didn’t need any of it.
The second they stood facing one another, everything else disappeared.
They smiled.
They laughed.
They naturally moved closer together.
Without me saying a word they simply relaxed into each other’s company.
Some couples need encouragement to forget the camera is there.
Lesley Ann and Julie-Marie forgot about it almost instantly.
That’s the beauty of photographing people who are completely comfortable together.
You don’t need to manufacture moments.
You simply wait for them to happen.
Two People Who Bring Out the Best in Each Other
Every couple has their own way of communicating.
Watching Lesley Ann and Julie-Marie together made that obvious.
Lesley Ann has a wonderful energy about her. She’s full of life, quick to laugh and naturally brings people together.
Julie-Marie balances that perfectly.
She has a quieter presence, but when she’s with Lesley Ann you can see how naturally she relaxes. Every smile becomes easier. Every laugh comes quicker. Every little glance says more than words ever could.
It’s one of those relationships where each person brings out the very best in the other.
As the day went on, that became even more obvious.
A Beautiful Outdoor Ceremony
The ceremony took place outside beneath another beautiful blue July sky.
The setting at Fernhill House is something special.
Guests were surrounded by colourful gardens, mature trees and beautifully landscaped grounds while music filled the air.
As Lesley Ann and Julie-Marie made their way towards one another, there was a lovely sense of excitement among everyone watching.
It wasn’t a ceremony filled with grand gestures.
It didn’t need to be.
It was full of genuine smiles.
Little glances.
Quiet laughter.
The sort of moments that happen naturally when two people are simply enjoying the biggest day of their lives.
Ruby Quietly Became the Star
Every wedding seems to have one person who quietly steals everyone’s attention.
This time it was Ruby.
Ruby had travelled all the way from Australia with her mum and dad to celebrate her auntie’s wedding.
From the minute I met her she was smiling.
Every time the camera appeared she somehow had another pose ready.
Another smile.
Another expression.
She was full of confidence, full of personality and an absolute pleasure to photograph.
Children don’t pretend.
That’s why they often produce some of the most genuine photographs of the entire day.
Ruby certainly did.
And Then There Was “Spud”
One of my favourite moments happened during the ceremony.
The celebrant asked a young family member why everyone called her “Spud.”
Without any hesitation she replied,
“Because when I was little my parents said I looked like a spud.”
The laughter that followed spread through the entire ceremony.
Those are the moments no one plans.
They’re impossible to script.
Years from now I can almost guarantee people will still be laughing about that story.
Speeches That Said Everything
The speeches brought another side of the day.
Among the laughter came some beautifully heartfelt words.
As Julie-Marie spoke about Lesley Ann, the emotion became impossible to hide.
Lesley Ann’s tears said everything anyone needed to know.
Sometimes photographs don’t need huge reactions.
A single tear.
A quiet smile.
Someone reaching for a hand.
Those tiny moments often become the most treasured memories.
My Favourite Photograph
People often expect photographers to choose a dramatic sunset photograph as their favourite.
Not this time.
Mine came during the cake cutting.
By then the nerves had completely disappeared.
Lesley Ann and Julie-Marie were simply enjoying themselves.
They laughed while feeding one another tiny pieces of cake.
They joked.
They smiled.
They forgot everyone else was watching.
Standing there with my camera, I wasn’t thinking about perfect posing.
I was watching two people completely lost in the moment.
That’s what makes photographs last.
Not perfect smiles.
Real ones.
The Old Head
Later in the day we made our way to one of my favourite locations in Cork.
The Old Head.
Standing on those cliffs together with the Atlantic stretching out behind them was the perfect way to finish the portrait session.
No rushing.
No pressure.
Just two people enjoying a quiet few moments together after one of the biggest days of their lives.
The scenery speaks for itself.
Huge skies.
Wild coastline.
Fresh Atlantic air.
It’s impossible not to stop for a second and simply appreciate where you are.
Dancing Into the Evening
As the evening continued, family and friends gathered around for the first dance.
Guests had travelled from all over Ireland and from Australia to celebrate together.
Watching everyone surround Lesley Ann and Julie-Marie on the dance floor reminded me what weddings are really about.
Not the flowers.
Not the table plans.
Not even the photographs.
They’re about bringing people together.
For one day.
For one celebration.
For one story.
Why I Love Photographing Weddings at Fernhill House
Every venue has its own personality.
Fernhill House has found a wonderful balance between beautiful surroundings and a relaxed atmosphere.
The gardens are exceptional.
The outdoor ceremony space feels intimate while still giving guests plenty of room.
The Styling Lounge makes the morning preparations enjoyable rather than stressful.
The staff keep everything moving effortlessly without making the day feel rushed.
Most importantly, couples actually get time to enjoy their wedding.
Guests naturally drift through the gardens, chatting, laughing and taking everything in.
As a photographer, that creates opportunities that simply don’t exist in venues where everyone feels confined indoors.
